"Harmless"? HA!
There are a number of varieties of "soft fuzzy" caterpillars that are not the least bit soft and fuzzy: Their "hairs" are actually needle sharp little spines, filled with venom and as brittle as glass, which will break off in your skin with even the most casual contact. I've been stung by bees and wasps a few times in my life, and been bitten by fire ants, but none of them were really so bad. It hurts a little and swells up for a couple of days, but basically no big deal. However, those "harmless" caterpillars are damn near deadly! I didn't even know it was there until I brushed my arm against it and about fifty of the spines broke off in my skin. It was like being stung by fifty wasps all at once.
That was the day I learned that the whole "passing out from pain" idea is a myth. You pass out from low blood pressure caused by blood loss. If the injury doesn't cause blood loss, then you stay conscious no matter how bad the pain gets!

Ya they can cause very very big time pain.There are some that have venom that any bird trys to eat them its there last meal on this world.Now I have been stung by yellowjacket on my hand.Man that hurt and then burn swells up then starts to intch.When I was A kid there were times the wasps seemed to get extra mean.You didn,t have to do any thing.You could be no were near their nest.Trying to pick from the garden was well interesting.
