Back to the Go Nagai Monster Parade, we continue by starting with Rugon, who was the first Haniwa Phantom featured on the pilot episode of the Kotetsu Jeeg anime and, as the name Haniwa implies, was a giant Clay figure, however a Giant Robot cover in such, as result of Himika's knowledge of science and magic. He had an overall humanoid robust body, with varying tunes of dark and light terracotta, with a long yet considerable fat neck and a small head, with two small horn skulls on the knees. His combat skills where shown to be overall super strength and a lance, as well could jump very high.
In the Hiroshi Shiba races for Grand Prix in the middle of a rain, almost losing the race and life thanks to a cheating tactic by Don and Pancho (no, joking, Pancho fired a banana peal from a bazooka), causing Hiroshi to lose control, crash and get tossed of the car and be run over by the other racers. To the shock of the crowd, and Hiroshi himself, he stands up mounts his car and resumes the race as if nothing happen, beating Don. Meanwhile, in the depths of the underground world, Himika reawaken along with her army and proceeds to go forth with her plans with the retaking of Japan. Her awakening is mistaken as a string of Earthquakes by the populous, but in the Build Base, Prof. Shiba knows the readings of it and proceed to drive home to get his son when he is stopped by Ikima (one of Himika's 3 Generals) asking for the location of the Chrysalis (a bell like object discovered by Shiba and a Partner years prior). He is beaten, but falls from the cliff, Ikima and the soldiers run away when Michi Uzuki shows up finding his empty car, and the professor at the bottom of the cliff, she later helps him home, but dies of his wounds, giving Hiroshi a gift, which end up been the gloves and the Jeeg Pendant..
Time later, an irritated Hiroshi rides on his Motorcycle and was about to throw his father's last gift when he hears his voice (coming from the pendant) and Hiroshi rides to the Build Base, where he enters the computer room where he finds an A.I. Of the late Professor recounting his discovery of the Chrysalis Bell and the danger posed by the Jamatai, and reveals to him he was the Steel Jeeg and the Chrysalis Bell is inside him, as well the function of the Gloves and Pendant. Afterwards, the professor is made aware of an unidentified object and Hiroshi leaves to confront it while Michi takes off on the Big Shooter Jet.
When Hiroshi arrives, Rugon is already attacking the city and throwing a large piece of Debris on the Bridge, Hiroshi jumps from the bike and transforms onto his Cyborg form, then the head of Jeeg. The Big Shooter shows up and fires the components but the punches hit the body while Rugon his the Jeeg head. Still, Hiroshi completes the build and confronts the Monster as the Steel Jeeg. Both Giant Fight, but Rugon grabs Jeeg while in mid air, in order to ram it onto the ground. Michi fires missiles at the beast from behind, blasting the right arm off, while Jeeg uses Knuckle Bombers that blast off his left leg. Jeeg then uses his Magnetic Power to grab on to Rugon and dispatches it with the Jeeg Breaker, crushing it and making it explode.
Major differences to the volume 1 Manga – beside the fact Hiroshi's cyborg origin differs in the show from the manga (in the Manga he is gun down along with his father by the Jamatai, with one foot actually been severed off) Rugon was not the first Haniwa Phantom to see action (in fact he is not in the Manga at all, quite rare), but were two nameless Phantoms, a skinny one with a lance and a larger robust one with a sword, these two monsters are seen in the intro sequence of the anime, and in fact, the Haniwa Swordsman was present helping Ikima group stopping Hiroshi and Prof. Shiba. Also, Hiroshi's relation with his father is more warmer and supportive, where as in the anime, the two barely had like 5 seconds of talk and Hiroshi was quite cold to him before his death. In the Manga, is the father that takes Hiroshi home to do the procedure where he is converted into a cyborg before he died from his wounds. Also, Don and Pancho, and the Mecha-Dons for that matter, were characters exclusive to the Anime, and were not featured in the Manga.
