Obviously I'm not talking about the regular stone gargoyles. Here, Gargoyle is the name of a sort of heavily magic-augmented militia unit. It takes many years of training and physical/psychological torture to "make" a gargoyle, and several more to make them combat-ready. The result is a being with a "fixed" spiritual and bodily state with a high tendency to follow certain orders with a face that seemed to be set in stone (which is probably why they were named gargoyles). With such a high resilience, defense, and loyalty, they were seen as an effective super soldier. After several decades of being used in war, they were quickly re-organized into peace keepers due to over expansion of occupation. They became exceptionally effective at this.

Because of being hyper-exposed to pain and experience, gargoyles cease to live life as "normal." Everything is mundane to them, yet they don't complain one bit. That means they wont ever look at themselves as "pretty" or "fulgy" ever again (which is why red dude on top never bothered to heal his ear) Their bodies and souls also obtain interesting properties on their own. All wills of good an evil are reset, though often their memories end up having to be suppressed (and often would be "required" to be completely locked down.) Their aura sense is much, much greater; all other senses are whispers in comparison. Also, because of this, they are so in tune with a sort of spirit network, they are always in contact with each other. Having established a centralized council, this is a little frightening, especially to a certain mage legion who created them in the first place.

Although it's not as if this legion is dependent on them...
