I've heard various theories as to where the heart shape came from. I think my favorite is that it was supposed to be a stylized depiction of the female buttocks. XD

Somewhat less titillating, but perhaps more believable, is the theory that it was fashioned after the shape of a certain kind of seed pod, whose contents were widely used as an aphrodesiac. Although either way, it would seem that throughout history love wasn't always clean.
