And Peppy eyes looked him incredulously and says: “Didn’t I tell you to go to bed?”
But he doesn’t notice that Fox is crying. The kit buries his face in his arm. Choking.
The beer clinks when it’s set down on the dining room table. Peppy drops to his knees, pulls the arm away from the kit’s face. “Hey. What’s the matter?”
“I… I…” can’t even say it.
He wants to say he misses them.
He wants to say he needs them.
He wants to say he needs them to come home.
But he can’t.
Peppy hugs him, holds him close.
Props Fox’s head up on his bandaged shoulder.
Whispers: “Shhh, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I understand. I know. I’m here.”
