This is actually a Goosebumps book that I stumbled upon an audiobook version of The Haunted School a book from late in the run of the original Goosebumps books. The plot succinctly is two kids (in 1997) discover the fate of the missing class of 1947. It involves a timeless dimension where color and sometimes sanity doesn't survive.
