Rift seeks out people who seem particularly depressed or hopeless, erases their memory and then 'happens to stumble upon' the new amnesiac, feeding them lies about a life he makes up for them and then taking them out to the isolated forest town where he lives. Here, he believes the person can lead a happier life. He runs a farming community with about 50-or-so people who were either severely depressed beforehand or doing 'evil' things, as he feels 'evil' isn't inherent and having one's memory erased is more humane than a life in prison. Rift never reveals his powers to others and can seem like a very timid, passive dude if you don't know about the whole memory-erasure thing. He's not even the mayor of the forest town he created and instead convinced the first woman he brainwashed that she created the town, and poses as an ordinary (if very timid) farmer.
