Unless that's a Motorex car, (if so, can you get a picture of the "Imported by Motorex" sticker?) that guy better be careful, theres a huge mess going around with regards to imported Skylines, all over the place. California and New Jersey have been hit the hardest so far, with lots of people getting 60-day "Export or Crush" letters.
from what I've heard there's 5 states where those car can be legal, I know that one of those is florida, I donno the others, that's a montreal JDM importator that told me this, also seems that americans are ready to pay more for the same car(r32 GT-R in montreal = about 9500can$, in US I believe it's more than 15 000$ O.o)
WRONG. please believe me man, I'm not being an ass. you can get "state-legal" titles for the cars in a bunch of states, but they're not allowed here. They (Aside i,et the Motorex cars, which were grandfathered in) do not conform to US crash test regulations. I mean, you can get a title and a plate in a few states, but Federal Law (the car is illegal) trumps state law (its a car, it's got a registration etc.) every time. I've done months of research on this, when I was looking for one to call my own.
Also, the reason they cost so much less in canada, is that under the 15 year rule, R32s are allowed into canada. (15 yr rule being that cars 15 years or older don't need to conform to regulations)
However, in the US, we have a 25 year rule, so they're not allowed here. a Motorex R32 GTR will fetch around 30-40k US. a "state legal(has registration and plate, but is not a Motorex car)" R32 GTR will fetch around 20-25k

oh well, I knew about motorex ones being shitless expansive for registration reasons, but seriously, it is still freaking expansive, a r32 GT-R in auctions in japan worth about 5-6000$...
and off course I knew the 15y/o law, I'm fucking pissed by the temporary ban in my province >.< they won't let us register new RHD car untill someone prove that it is not more dangerous than a LHD... witch is completly stupid since there's no major accident with RHD cars since they're popular to import...

Trying to find a white R33 online that was in a mag a few years back, think it was SCC but can't be certain. Either way, white, grey carbon fiber, RED interior to match the Bride Brix seats(even a car seat for a baby if I'm not mistaken), was the absolute epitome of gorgeousness. Absolutely love the back-end of this one though, and I admit I'm curious about the wheels.
Looking at what dogapult has said above, this kind of Skyline is becoming illegal, or very difficult to own, in the States. Thinking only from a car point of view, I think this is a good thing. It's so rare to find one of these that hasn't been raped around with mods and bolt-on plastic bits. I've driven a few Skylines, and hated almost all of them, because driving them was a constant full-on battle with understeer, as well as the shame of driving something that's louder than a rock concert and covered in more plastic fins and skirts than an group of cetacean fursuits. But when I got to drive the standard R33 GT-R V-spec, completely standard even down to the carpet mats, I realised why people like them. It was amazing. There was understeer, but not much. It all felt so correct. I realised that all the tuned Skylines were not improved, they were spoiled, in looks, sounds, and in handling. So while the standard car may be a marvel, there will be ten other cars which will have been adulterated, and would make my heart sink to see.
