A photo of the Legendary KOMA 1520 transmitter building in Moore Oklahoma (south of Oklahoma City) I took in 2002. There was no fence surrounding the transmitter site so it was easy to get a good shot.
Once a great Top 40 station, this 50,000 watt powerhouse with 3 huge towers could be heard all over Oklahoma during the day. At night the signal pattern switches to a western direction, and 1520 can be easily picked up clearly on the west coast.
In the 80's it became a short-lived country and then MOR station, but in 1988 they flipped it to oldies and became a successful station again along with a FM sister station at 92.5.
Now 1520 is known as KOKC, running mostly (boring) syndicated news talk and Oklahoma University sports. And also getting horrible ratings in the market like a lot of AM stations now. I haven't been by the transmitter site in years, I hope those letters are still on the transmitter building.
BTW I just found this video and aircheck of KOMA from 2001. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbbixCsCTqU

Here's a history of KOMA - http://www.komaradio.com/komainfo.aspx
From what I've read over the years, K-O-M-A stood for the states it can cover: Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas.
The Owners wanted a "new image" for 1520 so they changed the calls to KOKC about 5 years ago. It hasn't helped the ratings any.

Wow! I miss KOMA a lot. I always used to listen to it in the early mornings before I had to sign on back when I was in the radio biz.
Here are some jingles from KOMA I recorded back then:
