That was a very sad part of the first series, mainly because they hadn't even hinted at death of pokemon until you got to that town and suddenly you find out they die and that quebone is an orphan. From what I heard quebone's name or at least placeholder name was orphan.

They say Baby Kangaskhan was supposed to evolve to Cubone. Missingno has yet to miss it's mother.

Actually, this was always one of my favorite aspects of the Cubone line. You start with Cubone, this little constantly-crying emo guy who carts around his parent's skeletal remains as he mourns his mom. But level him up enough, and he transforms into a Marowak, who clearly has overcome his childhood issues to develop into a massively-powerful (with a Thick Club, anyway) hardcore warrior who uses his bones out of respect for the dead, not depression/dissonance.
It's like the entire species gets to have personal character development.

Or maybe I just always read way too much into it.
