so you cut out pieces of self adhesive vinyl and layer them into the image, lining where necessary. do you use anything as a top layer or cover to hold the whole thing together or is the self adhesive usually enough not to have to worry about it?

it's usually sticky enough to stay in place, thin black lines will fall if the sticker is rub hard...but the main layer's should survive time and abuses. I've been looking for something to use as a top layer...but nothing yet gives the results I'm looking for.

i'd suggest a lamination, but you'd prolly get bubbles because of the layering...you might try a light acrylic coat, there are a number of spray coats that create a smooth clear coat without disturbing the image below. i had some stuff a while back that was designed for coating images to cement, aside from being shiny you couldn't tell it was there, but you could skateboard or whatever you liked on it and the underlaying elements remained undisturbed
