Yes, what I referenced was this drawing of a brigandine from 武藝圖譜通志, a late 18th century manual on arms, armors, and martial arts. The garment itself was usually made of cloth, and the plates fixed to it could be either metal or leather.
Like the expression on his face, looks like a mix of alert and anxious to me, which I reckon makes sense.
It took me a moment to realize he was holding a bow; once I noticed his quiver, it registered to me that it must have been a bow. I was about to ask if he was holding a gun or a sword. I didn't notice the string until I looked more closely.
