Kendall City Tribune [Collab. w/ Russell Tuller]
This is another collaboration project done with the fantastic Russell Tuller over on deviantArt. Inspired by the intro to one of my recent stories "Infinite Blue", Russell created this image of Kaleb Dagny, the first successful case of species reassignment in the US. When asked to create an accompanying fictional, newspaper-styled article for the image, I took up the challenge and this is what resulted. All text and typography was done by me to compliment Russell's art. Putting as much readable text on the image presented some challenges with the creation of this piece, but I am incredibly pleased by the end result. :)
Thanks again for choosing to bring my story to life with your talents Russell! I'm already looking forward to our next project together. :)
You can view the HQ Version of this piece over at my Patreon page, where you can get early access to more stories and illustrations, join the Discord server, and more! I put a lot of love into each piece that I create so any support there would help me to create more of these projects to share with you. :)

Thank you. And I understand what you mean about the text resolution. It was a consequence of the amount of text for the article, and FA limiting images to a 1280 x 1280 pixel display. The HQ version available for viewing on Patreon is at 2000+ resolution making it much easier to read if you'd like.
What an interesting concept, though surely it rests squarely in the realm of fantasy. I have to imagine this scenario completely ignores today's reality and just allows escape into a world where something like this could be a wonderful reality.
I've had a similar concept in mind as the basis for a story, but I'm not so interested in writing these days. Still, this may inspire me to put pen to paper (or hands to home keys) and jot it down, but in the meantime, perhaps this image can inspire a debate if anyone is interested: What would happen if somehow someone were able to achieve something like this. What would life be like? What would the consequences be? How would people react? How would you react?

Like most technological advancements in our society, I imagine the discovery of such a process would initially be met by skepticism, doubt, and beyond that fear. When it became more mainstream and featured heavily in the media, there would become a gradual transition to it becoming more common as regulations were put in place. Some would herald it as the ultimate identity choice, and perhaps for some it would even develop into an almost religious fervor based around certain celebrated animals. Perhaps instead of death to choose to become an animal would be a means of reaching a preferred afterlife.
However, if the process became too common then there would be become exceptional amounts of vacancies in lower level positions (I imagine those with great affluence would be more reluctant on the average to undergo such a procedure). As for people in general, I think that species reassignment would cause a rift in people wanting to go through that choice or considering it. They may be seen as traitors, confused, or mentally delusional for considering such a thing. Families would be broken from lack of understanding. At the same time, it could present opportunities for people to band together and realize a life that no others in humanity had been able to experience before. It would be intriguing to see if a reverse process could potentially be developed to allow for those who had experienced being an animal to report back on that kind of existence, offering many new insights for science.
Overall, you need only look to major movements for folks today trying to establish their identities to see the majority of the process of what would happen. It's certainly an open and interesting idea to consider all of the possibilities.

My assumptions, based on my own experiences, are that society would reject such a notion with such fervor as to be deadly to anyone lucky enough to undergo such changes.
The ideas presented here are attainable according to my research. They wouldn't manifest as pictured, but some obvious changes would be visible sufficient to tell people that the individual has animal genetic characteristics which could only have come from animals.
I know you well enough to know that you, like me, would like to believe society doesn't think and act against us, but they do and they would. So my assumption the very real consequences of someone attaining canine physical traits is that they would be killed in no uncertain terms by the mob mentality that rules even the furry fandom these days.
Why do I believe this? Because in discussing my theories with even furries, they outright reject the notion of actually having animal characteristics attained in the only way they can be attained. This is why I classified this artistic venture as pure fantasy as it makes no consideration for the reality someone in that situation would face in today's social environment.
Now, in the context of species reassignment as you present, which is arguably similar to gender reassignment, that's even worse as far as acceptance socially. I understand you are likely projecting into a future, but it is no future humanity is on any course towards. Gender reassignment is a farce anyway, because the gender that is being assigned is a role in society, not a physical characteristic. So the equivalent to what you are presenting is simply body modification, whereby people change their appearance to match their perceived desired role in society, and indeed, people already have this available to them, for example in the form of pup play, even if these roles are limited in time and scope.
An interesting debate indeed... Thank you.
