I always assume the police want to help me with something when they stop me about something. Makes the whole encounter run much more smoothly.

That sounds like a good mindset to have.

I think the most bizarre encounter with the police that I had was when I was out on a walk around the block. I start down one street when a police officer stops me and asks what I'm doing. I reply "I'm walking down this street" and the officer smiles and goes "No, you're not" in that firm but friendly tone they're so good at. I'm about to question this when I notice the second policeman who is standing a bit further back and to the side, also with a friendly smile but with the right hand hidden behind the back and an empty gun holster. And so I go "Oh, right you are. I'm walking down that street" and indicating another direction. "Yes you are. Have a nice day."

I still have no idea what that was about. Probably better that way.

Maybe there was something going on and they didn't want you to walk into potential danger.

Clearly something very bad was going down. Seeing Swedish police with their weapons drawn is just... it took a while for it to even sink in. You kinda forget they're even armed.
