Just... ????????? I am unfamiliar with any boletales which will grow from wood, as these two mushrooms clearly are. They seem to have a Leccinum or Chalciporus-like selection of features, so perhaps that helps? On the other hand, they also line up somewhat with Xerocomus subtomentosus... Weird!

They're growing out from a distinct chunk of oak knothole. I lifted the chunk and there were not any apparent mycelium strands extending below into the ground either, as I expected to find... I'd appreciate any insight into identifying these bebs and clarification about why they're growin' from dead wood!
