The crew would have been alerted to rising stress levels before the couplings tore, I would think... An attack or sabotage is the only things I can think of that would lead to abrupt and catastrophic increases in stress...

No, I'd say another much larger ship appears to have overtaken them from behind, and the spatial distortion of its shockwave overstressed the links...the way a small boat may be capsized by the wake of a larger boat. There IS another ship hiding under the small images on the previous page.

I'm not sure. That page just didn't generate much traffic and the system is NOT an easy one to use to update comics with. I'm sorta 'meh' on that one.
