I recently received a commission. The person wanted me to draw her new character, who is "cunning, sly, open, impulsive, confident, flirty, judgmental, agile, and sarcastic". Holy crap, what animal could that be, hmmmmmmm? A fox! Just as I opened up photoshop, I realized that the person had never specified which type of fox this character was. So as I facepalm, I go to google and just start thinking of how people usually describe foxes. You know... fuffy-as-heck tail, super cute face, lithe body, the works.
Well, I actually started drawing a nice pose for the commission, and after I was tired of messing with the neck and head position, I started doodling off to the side. And that's where this drawing comes in. He's annoyed (a direct reflection of my mood), he's chubby, scruffy, and everything someone wouldn't want for a cutesy fox character.
It actually bugs me that people choose fox fursonas because they think they are cunning and sneaky and blah, blah, blah. (Please, don't flame me. It's just my opinion.) The fox is not the only creature on the earth with those attributes, you know? That pretty well describes every predator on the face of the Earth. Smart animals usually live long and stupid ones get themselves killed or eaten.
These animals have to be tough to make it out there. But unless you're living out in the wilderness hunting for your food every day and doing everything in your power to survive, you really have no connection to these beautiful animals. The only hunting you do is for groceries at the supermarket.

kinda off subject; but one year when I was deer hunting I had a fox just stroll on up to within 30ft of me, he had his head down and sniffing something good on the trail. I stood up and he still came on and then I cleared my throat and he stopped and looked at me and turned around and walked off.
Oh, cliched fursonas.. I represent myself as a coyote. I hunt, fish, etc... And I love watermelons, which makes me laugh a little bit, since coyotes are one of the top threats to watermelon crops.
However, it gets annoying after a while, seeing all of the other canine fursonas. GOD FORBID your 'sona is something like a tapir, coati, burro, gazelle, or anything low on the food chain or not featured in your favorite anime. Nope. Wolf it is.
