well, long story short mother's side of family are earthin elementals that cant control element but have deep connection to it, kinda like a right of passage thing. when they come of age they can choose how to manifest and show this elemental connection physically be it simple or elaborate.. she saw this design, no doubt from the previously mentioned source and decided "Hey, imma do that."
