Tried to sleep, but insomnia got me back up, so I decided to process a photo I took on Saturday.
After much complaining of not seeing a harvestman for some time, I happened across this one on the side of my house.
So, I grabbed my camera as not to miss the opportunity.
Harvestmen (Order Opiliones) are often mistakenly called spiders. They are arachnids, as spiders are, but are very different from spiders.

Well for starters they have a body that is not divided into two distinct sections like a spider's. Also, they lack any kind of venom with which to kill prey. A further difference is that Harvestmen are omnivorous, feeding on both plant and animal matter, be it alive or dead. A popular urban myth claims that 'daddy long legs' (a nickname for these animals) have the most lethal venom of any arachnid but are incapable of delivering a harmful bite to humans. This is false in two respects; as mentioned above, they lack any venom at all, and second, the myth actually refers to a species of spider commonly called the 'cellar spider', which does have venom, but it is not medically significant to humans.
I actually have two distinct species of these around my house; one with a leg span of around 2 1/2 to 3 inches with a white underside and tan & brown-patterned dorsal coloration & white stripes on the legs, and another one with a roughly 1 inch legspan with solid brown & black body & legs, respectively. The former tends to be more abundant, sometimes about a dozen or moreon one wall of my house alone. Another great photo, keep up the good work.
Mebbe we should introduce your American daddy-long-legs to my European daddy-long-legs (once they finish the ol' ooh-la-la) and see what happens. I imagine your harvestmen will end up with a smile on their odd little faces when filled up with a meal of crane-fly. :)
Superb, superb, SUPERB photograph as ever, Queue!

It very well could've been. They have such giant creatures in general on Vancouver Island. I found a giant slug too. It scared the shit out of me because I thought it was a wet twig (it was near black), and I went to pick it up. "Ahhhh" XD
Big spiders totally are cool >.> We should go take pictures of bugs over in B.C. Best. Trip. Ever!

Daddy-long legs is a colloquial name often ascribed to these guys.
I try to avoid calling them that, since there are two other similar looking critters that are also often referred to as Daddy-long legs so I stick with the scientific name to keep there from being confusion! :)
