Little Red, freshly hatched. In my novels, dragons are hatched out of large eggs, easily the size of golden retreivers with Great Dane sized paws. Their necks, however, are so slim and slender that for the first few hours, their biggest challenge is simply learning how to hold up their large heads. The fat deposits on their heads, much like a python's, nourish the hatchling for the first few months of life before depletion and necessity to hunt, at which point they will shrink to the skull and reveal the hatchling's horn nubs. The wings of the hatchlings are too small and weak to fly with for several years, which necessitates the camoflage patterns, despite their gemstone-esque scales.
