Collecting material from DC Comics Presents #26 and The New Teen Titans #1-8 by Marv Wolfman and George Perez.
The collection begins with DC Comics Presents #16, a preview of the upcoming Ne Teen Titans series. Robin arrives at S.T.A.R. Labs to stop the terrorists that have besieged the place, but finds himself transported elsewhere. He recognises Wonder Girl and Beast Boy (now calling himself Changeling), but there are other teen heroes there that he has never met before, such as Starfire, Raven and Cyborg. There is no time for introductions as an other-dimensional monster starts to attack S.T.A.R. Labs.
The series begins proper in The New Teen Titans #1. A Gordanian slave ship carries Tameranian princess Koriand'r to be sold to an unknown buyer. Koriand'r escapes to Earth and lands in New York's East Side. Meanwhile, the empath Raven gathers a team of young heroes to rescue the escaped alien princess.
Maybe it is because I am more familiar with the Teen Titans cartoon, but I don't remember Beast Boy ever being as annoying as he is in this issue. Maybe its down to early instalment weirdness and the writers haven't gotten a hang on his character yet. I never read the old Doom Patrol series, so I can't say whether Beast Boy was as annoying back then. I am most familiar with Wally West as the Flash, so it is unusual for me to see him as Kid Flash.
In #2, a young man by the name of Grant Wilson starts getting abusive with his girlfriend when Starfire and Wonder Girl arrive to break it up. Swearing revenge, Grant seeks the help of H.I.V.E. to gain the ability to wreak his revenge. Grant takes on the name Ravager and sets out to get his own back on the New Teen Titans.
This issue was also the first appearance of Slade Wilson, also known as Deathstroke the Terminator. Except we don't know his real name yet. I guess Slade's origin will come in a later volume. it's a good thing I went nuts when Comixology had a Teen Titans sale and I bought all the volumes of New Teen Titans. I'm not sure how i feel about Deathstroke most of the time. He is undeniably badass, but sometimes he seems like a massive creep. I can't get into details for fear of spoilers, so we will have to wait until we get to the Judas Contract story line before I can say why I think Deathstroke is such a creep.
In #3, the villain Doctor Light starts assembling his own team of super-villains, the Fearsome Five. The plan is to prove the team's worth by destroying the Titans. Meanwhile, the Titans move into their new headquarters.
It's good seeing the Titans fighting the baddies, but I like it even more when I get to see more about their private lives. In the previous issue we got to see the sweet mansion that Changeling's stepfather owns. In this issue we get to see Donna's fancy apartment that she now shares with Starfire. We will get to see more about the newer members of the team in Tales of the New Teen Titans, but that isn't for a while yet.
Zatanna alerts the Justice League to the presence of three suspicious sorcerers in #4. Raven appears and tries to get the Justice League to stop, but they don't listen. Raven returns to the Titans and tells the team about the demon Trigon and to stop him from rising they must stop the Justice League from fighting the sorcerers.
Ho-hum. It's yet another story where two different sets of heroes have a misunderstanding and end up getting in a fight. Those sort of stories are always so tiresome. Now you know why I've given up on all those recent Marvel events. Say what you like about DC's big crossover events, but at least they're not churning out the same old events and having the heroes fight each other instead of actually stopping the bad guys.
Trigon makes his first full appearance in #5 as he sends his minion Goronn to prepare for his arrival on Earth. Raven seeks the help of the other Titans, but they are starting to grow suspicious of her constant comings and goings.
Poor, Wally. He takes it the worst when the Titans find out that Raven has been manipulating them. He was enjoying a normal life without worrying about being a superhero when Raven made him rejoin the Titans and possibly even made him believe that he loved her. The Wally West I am familiar with as the Flash seemed to be a pretty chill guy. The Wally West seen here as Kid-Flash seems more of a headstrong jerk. I guess that's character development for you.
In #6, Raven agrees to travel to Trigon's home realm to rule at his side in an attempt to save Earth. The rest of the Titans follow suit in an attempt to save their friend.
Trigon seemed pretty sure that he would easily take over the Earth if the Titans failed to stop him. Maybe that's discounting all of the other magic users in the DC Universe. Zatanna and Doctor Fate defeat beings like Trigon all the time. The DC Universe might not have its own Sorcerer Supreme, but isn't as there's nobody to protect the place from magical threats.
The Fearsome Five return in #7 and set out to free Psimon from the extra-dimensional prison that Trigon banished him to in #5.
This new team has only been around for seven issues and already villains have taken over their headquarters. I shouldn't be too upset as this sort of thing happens all the time to the other heroes. How many times has the Justice League had their headquarters taken over by villain any way? It happens all the time in the Marvel Universe at least. The X-Men's mansion is always getting blown up and there was even a famous Avengers story line where their mansion was taken over by villains (Under Siege, but that's another review for another day).
The New Teen Titans take some time off after all the action in #8. Starfire and Donna have lunch. Raven fights terrorists on university campus. Board members of Dayton Industries are being killed and it comes to Changeling to solve the crime. Cyborg meets up with an old flame that he hadn't seen since the terrible accident that caused him to become Cyborg. Kid-Flash talks to his parents about whether he should give up being a superhero or not.
I am a sucker for downtime issues where the heroes just hang around and take a rest from all the action. It's always nice to see more of the heroes' private lives as well, like Donna's career as a fashion photographer. It also turns out that Cyborg had a girlfriend before his accident, but she doesn't react very well to the way he looks now. It turns out fine for Victor Stone as he later befriends a lady who works with children who have prosthetic limbs just like him.
Of all the New Teen Titans collections I have only ever read The Judas Contract, The Terror of Trigon and Who Is Donna Troy? I have only ever read parts of Marv Wolfman's Tomb of Dracula (mostly some bits involving Blade) and odds and ends of his run on Amazing Spider-Man (like the first appearance of Black Cat). I am much more familiar with George Perez's art. I first became aware of his work in Avengers with Kurt Busiek during the late 90's/early 2000's and I was hooked immediately. He always draws such a beautiful women and we have some very beautiful women with Starfire and Donna Troy. I love Starfire's massive hair. It's so fluffy I'm going to die!
My rating: 3.5 stars.
