My professor started ranting about this the other day.
At my school, to become a Graphic Deisgn Major is really difficult and competitive, but... that's not why I don't major in it. I don't think that's the case for other students either.
I don't want to be a graphic designer, but I'm taking the class because from what I was taught it was a good think for artists to have an understanding of.
I guess I'm just pointing out how the classes might be full of art students that think they can apply graphic design to their art/work, rather than it being full of people who think they have to become graphic designers.

Exactly. It can't hurt to get an understanding of the basics. That's why I'm going to take as many fine arts classes as I can-- I have the on-the-job part of graphic design down, but it's a good idea to get an appreciation for the fundamentals.

Graphic design has gotten a bad rap for quite awhile now. When I was in college, there was such a divide between the fine artists and the graphic designers, when in fact they should be cross-collaborating and mixing the two together! Some of the *best* design I've seen has been the result of taking half from the design world and half from the fine-art world. Design shouldn't just be this rigid, ultra-clean, computerized monster, it's gotta be organic, full of rich texture, etc. (There is a time and place for clean work, i.e. logo design for a corporate business, etc, but..) I'm much more into organic, textural, things that ALIVE with both a soul and energy of creation! (And now I'm rambling...)
Haha, yeah! :D You don't want all the same kinda people in classes like that anyways... mixing fine art and graphic art and fart art or whatever is good because you get so many different kinds of ideas. Any different perspective, when it comes to art and design, is worth considering. :3
I felt kinda bad for making my teacher a pig... it's not meant to be an insult... he just doesn't seem like a furry to me!
I agree. 8D Only a couple students get in, so the rest don't have much of a chance. And most graphic design jobs here ay they want people with at least 2 years experience, so unless you actually persue a job while you're in school, you're gonna have a hard time finding one after. D:

You ended a sentence with a preposition D: Not in the comic, but in the explaination~
Anyway, at my school (which cost 5k more than yours a semester x.x; ) I had a few teachers that preached like that, only they were more like "Every one of you want to become Game Designers, but none of you will succeed". I guess your teacher is just a bit sour that what he's teaching may not be used at all - but I can see you using some design in this comic~ (which I found pretty funny - the whole like, lines~ its to trendy <3)
A lot of teachers out there shouldn't be teachers, based on their personalities. Its hard to be a 'designer' of anything anymore, because that's such a broad term. For you, it'd more like be like, let's major in "Fucking Furry Art" or something like that >3

I'M NOT AN ENGLISH MAJOR.
Ah, that'd suck, being in school for something fun, but ultimately useless. 8D I still think I'd rather have a degree and do something fun, even if it won't lead to much. Then you can go back and feel awkward when you're older and get a better degree just to keep things going!
FURRY ART MAJORS WOOOOOOOOOOOO

Haha this is pretty much what I'm doing right now
I don't really have any teachers like this though. Generally they're pretty good about stimulating creativity and giving us enough freedom to do what we want, but with enough guidelines or restrictions that we're not completely blowing things off and taking the easy way out.
But yeah. Graphic designers lol

Well it's good you learned useful things, but it's too bad that a lot of others in the same field in school didn't end up with much either. I guess there are just already a lot of people that want to do that sorta thing, and that make it harder for everyone to find a job doing it. :B
It seems teachers who have taught for a prolonged time cannot help themselves but to go off on grand mologues regarding their particular speciality.
For me, back in High School, I was driven to drop out of a Mechanical Design class I thought would be interesting by the way the teacher kept ranting on about "The future is in plastics." and how he insisted that I, to draw a line, needed to do so more than once.
Though, happily, dropping that class was the best move ever for me. It moved me into Honors English and put me in a computer class filled with the most interesting people. Heck, this class was so new that we were permitted to upload games onto the school computers and play them when we were done with our work. I partially beat The Ultimate Doom at school as a result of this. Oopa!

Haha, yeah. I think art teachers are pretty interesting to listen to. (: Well, I guess maybe any teachers, but since they're at a different point, it's kinda fun to see where people are on their own paths. :B Luckily most seem pretty cool! This guy is fine too, just kinda pent up I guess, I dunno! Still interesting. :3
Mechanical design? I don't think I would'a expected that from you! I'm not even sure I know what it means, since I'm not sure what kinda things are considered mechanical or not... like can openers and iPods? :D
Either way, I think that's really cool. :D And luckily computer classes are so laid back! I accidentally called my graphic design class a computer class and it annoyed my teacher too. ;__; But... the fun part about classes with 'em is that you can goof off plenty. :D Good job on accomplishing stuff there! ;P

How true. Actually, you reminded me of the Creative Arts class I took during my under-graduate years. The class taught concepts and principles of art, music, and film with different professors taking turns teaching each section. Most notably of the trio was the art professor who had a thing for taking off his shoes and walking barefoot while he instructed us in his material. Good times!
Mechanical Design was, quite simply, a mistake from the beginning on my part. The course focussed on teaching young engineers how to use 2D / 3D Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) programs. I thought it might be fun to learn that kind of thing, but then quickly learned that the last thing on Earth I am ever going to be is an engineer. Though, I do have a friend who makes a fair living using CAD to design various systems like cooling towers and water treatment machinery for manufacturers and large-scale operations.
