we were given this Yoshitoshi drawing to interpret. He does his things in fountain pen and sumi ink, truly beautiful drawings. but i did mine in more of a printmaking technique. I first did a sketch of the piece onto the paper then painted all the parts i wanted white w/ rubber cement (leaving the lines i wanted bare). The rubber cement is water proof so it acts as a mask that the ink won't get on. So then i took a wash brush and spread a diluted wash of india ink over the figure. Where there wasn't rubber cement it left black (pretty nifty right?). And then i went back and did his hair w/ a quill pen and india ink. I wanted to put some text in it, and the image reminded me of this image from paradise lost so i put in one of my favourite phrases of all time: FELIX CULPA or in English "happy fall" referring to Lucifer's fall from grace and that of mankind's from Eden and in general.
