Notes of Interest: Tupolev's name comes from the name of Andrei Tupolev, a Russian aircraft designer and founder of the Tupolev Joint Stock Company, one of the biggest aviation companies in Russia and the world.
History: Like his lupine friend and comrade in arms Komari Gray, Volody Tupolev had a rather ordinary life growing up, unlike many mercenaries and freelancers who seem to have a shady and/or mysterious past. Average is really the only thing that could be used to describe his childhood and adolescence...he was born into middle class comfort in the Soviet Confederacy, the only child of his parents...or well, the only biological child.
At age 11, he discovered that a good friend of his from school, 12 year old Vasili Ilyushin was orphaned several years ago when his mother had passed away, and was currently living with a rather callous and uncaring family. The young wolf told his parents about his friend, and feeling that Vasili deserved better, they adopted him into their family by week's end. From that point on, the Tupolevs raised Vasili as if he were there own son and Volody's brother.
The adopted siblings lived a fairly normal life, completing middle and high school together, and it was in high school where he started going by his last name more than his first. He and Vasili both played on their high school's rugby team, and because there were several players named Volody on the team, they were all referred to by their last names to avoid confusion. Since then, it became second nature to both Vasili and himself to use his last name. He doesn't mind being called either one, so any friends and aquiantences are free to use either when referring to him.
By graduation, Vasili had already arranged to enlist in the Soviet Confederation Navy, and a month afterwards he was off for flight school. Volody on the other hand, though interested in the military as a career, decided to not enlist right away. Rather, he headed down to the local college and took a few computer tech classes. He always had an affinity for numbers, coding and cyphers, so he figured he would enhance his skills.
On getting there, he all but shattered the grading curve. His skills with coding, number processing and computer knowledge were so advanced that he outperformed even his instructors. He had taken an ethical hacking course, and found that he could crack even high security systems, including the college's own databases.
Graduating at the top of his class, and a year early (in a two year course), he figured that now would be a good time to enlist in the military. He joined the Soviet Marines, the elite branch of the military force. While there, he joined the renown 284th division, the elite sniper unit. While in boot camp, he realised he had an aptitude for heavy weapons, and was issued the Panzergewehr 98 Special Application Scoped Rifle, a heavy anti armour weapon that could fire 25mm cannon shells.
Much of his military career was a very calm one, with him seeing no real military 'action'. War games, maneuvers, and training exercises are what he spent most of his 18 month tour of service. Becoming rapidly bored of the endless repetition, he left the Soviet Marines under honourable discharge by not renewing his contract of service (which comes up for renewal every six months). Once on his own, he struck off to travel the Five Galaxies to see what might be out there.
Acquiring a starship he soon named Star Raider, he set off for the Thundercloud Galaxy. While there, he soon found out about the civil war between the Free World Alliance and the Tyrian Empire. Though he had no personal reasons to fight on either side, he took up an offer by the Free World Alliance to work as a sniper. Having no fondness for the ideals of the Empire and in need of a source of income, he took the Alliance up on its offer.
Several months after joining the Alliance's forces as a freelancer rather than a regular soldier, so he could leave when he desired should another job present itself, he made contact with his brother, who like himself had become tired of the repetitive life of the peacetime Soviet military...although apparently Vasili had a different experience in that he had actually engaged in live combat, against the Tyrian Empire no less. Tupolev quickly found out that the combat encounter was a Soviet black op, and that during it Vasili had tasted the revenge he had been desiring for quite a long time. The vengeance was for his parents, whose death he blamed on the Empire.
Towards the end of the black op, the naval fleet Vasili's squadron was based on was sent back to the Soviet homeland and his combat tour was over, despite his burning desire to keep hitting the Empire's forces with all he had. Tupolev told Vasili about the Free World Alliance and their ongoing fight....a week later Vasili was in the Thundercloud Galaxy, the ink on his military discharge papers barely dry.
Though Vasili mainly plied his trade as a fighter pilot while fighting for the Alliance, his keen eyesight also made him well suited to be a sniper, so Tupolev showed Vasili the way of the sniper. After a brief period of basic training in which Vasili excelled, the canine siblings soon headed out on regular sniper missions. From scouting and sabotage, to cutting communications to demoralising Imperial soldiers on the battlefield, they would take just about any sniper mission the Alliance would offer, especially if it involved eliminating high ranking Imperial officers.
Following the massive Imperial raid on Cyax II that caused the Alliance forces to scatter, Tupolev and Vasili struck off on sniper missions to further demoralise and strike at the Empire, despite the fact that they were paying for their expenses out of their own pockets. During one such mission, Vasili struck off on his own while Tupolev headed back to the Star Raider. At first assuming he was looking for weapons or other equipment they could sell to finance their sniper missions, Vasili returned with a mysterious blue gray furred vixen. The vixen was Crystal Shadowfire, with whom he and Vasili would soon be working in a much larger mission against the Empire, one that directly involved the Free World Alliance and furthered their cause.
The mission involved recovering intelligence and other information about a prototype Imperial starfighter, secretly being developed in a special facility concealed in the rubble of the city where they met Crystal. While Crystal set about stealing the intelligence she needed from Imperial mainframes, Tupolev lent her support by working on another terminal, hacking and counter hacking the mainframe's security software. Once the vixen had the information she needed, Tupolev covered her while the two of them escaped to the Star Raider while Vasili commandeered the only functioning prototype of the starfighter and escaped with it.
After that mission, he and Vasili offered to take Crystal back to the Free World Alliance when they would take the stolen prototype to them, however the vixen instead asked if she could join forces with him and Vasili. He agreed, knowing her skills in espionage and intelligence would be of great help to him and Vasili and even early on he was growing fond of her as a friend.
Since then, he and Crystal have become close to each other, becoming more like brother and sister than comrades in arms or even friends.
