A Thursday Prompt story derived from the prompt: carrier.
While most mothers can recall their own troubles and horror stories involving pregnancy, few have ever had to carry a shape-shifter. A fantasy/sci-fi short story featuring the discovery of an unborn child's "special ability", the problems it creates, and the potential dilema it presents.

Thought provoking, and dealing with some pretty heavy material in a well-managed manner. Most people don't touch abortion topics, but considering the massive ramifications of any decision, it makes sense that all aspects must be discussed as they were in the interchange between parents.
Don't hate me for this, because I'm not a huge advocate of the Twilight series, but there was the opening thought process in the fourth book where the character is wondering how you can love something that is killing you. I really like how that was written and it came to mind when I read your story.
That doctor really does need to tone down the nerd factor, though, because as fascinating as the situation is from a textbook standpoint, he's dealing with real people who are freaking the hell out, for good reason.

Thanks. I don't like being controversal (at least not over the top) but I try to be realistic. Since we use our own reality as the basis on which we judge all others, I figured that abortion needed to be mentioned too because that's what would happen in our society. Initially, I didn't even think about it, but then I remembered a family who went through a very similar situation. (The mom pregnant with a dragon, not the baby threatening the mom's life...wait, I think I said that backwards.) The doctors actually pressured her to have an abortion, but she said 'no'. Long story short, the mom survived but the baby died a few days after birth.
Twilight...Twilight.... Oh that. Never read it. I'm not a big fan of vampires and have little interest in vampiric romance.
Yes, the doc.... I kind of owe him an apology. I didn't exactly have huge plans for him, but he was supposed to be more sympathetic. But I needed to set the stage, build the world, create context, etc and he got stuck with the role of explaining 'what,' 'how,' and 'why'. About half way through I realized how unsympathetic he sounded and, rather than do a complete overhaul, I just went with it. Kind of like the scientist who is fastinated with the alien mosters who are about to tear him and his friends to pieces. "But it's a sulfure-based lifeform! Do you even realize what this means???"

Good choice to keep the work you'd already written. I just started the third draft of my next story chapter, and I never rewrite my stories. I guess I just haven't quite captured what I'm going for yet, and it's a pretty integral portion of character development. Perhaps if I go back I can find some sections and make use of them after all. Thanks for the idea.
eh, it's just a 'little' problem. Or as I would say, "It's only life and death. Not nearly as important as something like getting stuck in traffic." And don't forget the father. It might physically affect only the mother, but I wager that: wife + child (or children) = huge majority of most fathers' lives. As I'm sure you well know.
