While obesity and diabetes are linked, they're not caused by each other. (In fact, diabetes makes it harder for the body to burn sugars, so weight loss is a common sign of diabetes.) The link seems to be insulin resistance, causing the body to overproduce insulin and essentially "burn out" the production.
