Some people thin the thighs laterally too for a more animalish look, though I think that might create a fairly swaying gait in a biped :)
Putting animal feet on the end of full-length human legs can make the entire leg very long: I tend to reduce the tibia and fibula a notch to offset it. I'm playing with the idea of a more human-style heel-pad too, give them the option of locking the knee when standing around for a long time. Only works with rather short feet, probably.
There's lots of styles out there, certainly!

Oh yeah, for sure you can mess around with making legs seem longer or shorter - give them more curves or give them chicken-legs lol This is just how I do it, but I do somewhat personalize them to fit the character. This was just meant to give people a general idea of where to start.
Believe me, I could have gone into MUCH more detail about things like different leg shapes, paw-pads, etc. - but I kinda thought the tutorial was getting a bit long and I've been sitting at this computer for waaaay too long.

aha, missed that one.
one thing which some artists fail to notice is the point of weight, and what it means. then they place a straight digitigrade leg underneath their figures where the paws look forward, way too much in front of the body's center. which means in reality the figure would fall backwards. also, some (including me, I fear) create way too small paws for them...
when I draw digitigrade legs I tend to slide knee and ankle a bit upwards, unless I intend for very long legs, to adjust the overall leg's length to the rest, proportion-wise.
interesting and useful tut here. :)
