Having the Dragon By the.... (Spyro Reignited "Trilogy")
Rant incoming in 3....2...1...
You know when you work hard, have a lot of setbacks, and have more of a life that's more about surviving than living? And one of the best ways to get through day-by-day is to have something to look forward to down the road, like some reward to make it all feel worth it?
And do you also know that feeling when it gets snatched away from you by a fault not your own?
Yeah. That kind of thing happened.
Honestly, I knew something was amiss when the Spyro Reignited TRILOGY was doing so well. That, while Toys for Bob crippled Spyro by way of Skylanders by using his name and putting him in the backseat, they slowly began to make him center stage again, testing out with the Skylanders TV series. Then, they finally decided to go for broke and make a remaster of Spyro's original, greatest adventures by way of the Spyro Reignited TRILOGY. And not just that, they built them back from the ground up with the originals as a wireframe, with bits and pieces of fan talks and concerns as time went on. It was looking great that the Spyro Reignited TRILOGY would take us back to Spyro as he was. Toys for Bob was really making the effort, and they should be commended for going back to his roots and giving Spyro's TRILOGY a big return.
By now, with a decent attention span, you've probably noticed how I've been capitalizing the word TRILOGY. Well, that's what they said it was. ALL three games of Spyro's improved adventures on one disc, for a decent price.
WELL....turns out that may very well be a lie. And a lie like that is also false advertising. But, it's not, apparently, which makes no sense. It's not Toys for Bob's fault, those guys seem well keen on trying to do Spyro right. No, it's left to the big-gun (who's seemingly only franchise that keeps it afloat IS about guns), that's to publish it.
Activision.
Now, I honestly don't really care so much about "who" makes or "who" distributes media, I just don't have time to be concerned about such things. I mean game-wise, I never really had a problem. I can be patient with all that I've got going on, but when you've got few things to look forward to in the coming days, and you're use to setbacks and bull, when it happens to one of those things, you notice.
In this instance, it's a lie. The Spyro Reignited TRILOGY isn't a trilogy for everyone. That's right. If you go digital, fine, you're good (or ARE you? You'll see.). But, if like me, you go for ownership over convenience, want things all in one package, or don't have the time/data/ability to go digital in it's regard here, you're out of luck.
For those that don't know, the physical copies of the Spyro Reignited TRILOGY, isn't a trilogy at all. It's ONE GAME, the first one. That's right. That forty something you paid for three games? Yeah, Activision now say's you're getting ONE. Turns out, "Games 2 and 3 require download via internet". (One thing to keep in mind, if anything brings it up, there is a difference between INSTALLING and DOWNLOADING. Not going to say what it is, they'll need to figure it out themselves. Knowledge is Power!)
Now, for awhile, Activision was flimsy about revealing "just what was going on". And it was annoying as an egg-thief with rocket boots.
At first, people were unsure. Does the disc have ONLY Spyro 1, and you'd have to download the COMPLETE 2 and 3 from the net? Or was it stupid locked content, where you have to get a patch to "unlock" 2 and 3.
Well...turns out it's more the former. That's right, 2 and 3 you have to download IN FULL.
Their Excuse-Statement? "As with most games today, downloading an update after purchase is quite common. The language on packaging and on the web is to let players know the requirements for Spyro Reignited Trilogy."
Uh, the ONLY requirements there should be for a video game is that you have the freakin' console it's FOR. Oh, and by the way Activision...uh, this is funny ya know, you being a big company and all but....a GAME is NOT a PATCH.
And there's something weird about that too. Apparently there are "instructions", a "manual" to tell you how to get these games. Ok, that's weird right? It's almost like they're "teaching" physical buyers how to go digital, FORCING their hand. Or...it's something else, and the specifics to GET 2 and 3 aren't simply a free download for purchasers. But of course, no clarification...
Now, I get it. Toys for Bob is doing a great job getting Spyro to his roots again and have worked really hard from the ground up using the original framework of the past games to make it possible and authentic. So, doing THREE games at once? That's a tall order, and it can get harder with a series that evolved game-to-game. But, it's the publishers that handle the release date, and Activision set it. Which means, Toys for Bob may not be able to finish everything when the boxes and "publish discs" go out to the public, that they need to keep working up to the release date and put what they finish up into a "patch" to have everything ready.
That...is dumb. Not Toys for Bob, Activision. If your developers can't get the game COMPLETE on release date, PUSH IT BACK. Is that SO hard? I get it, everyone loves to get the release date for a wanted game, but when you get 1/3 of it, instead of the promised three, it's just not right.
But wait! There's more! According to some translation of the German backcover, there's some description that's rather concerning....
"Games 2 and 3 need to be downloaded from the internet. Contains 1 disc with game 1 and the digital download guide for games 2 and 3."
"Additional space may be needed for updates and functions. The required one can change. Downloadable items can be made available for purchase. Downloading necessary updates may be required to continue the game. By using this software, you accept the Software License Agreement and the Privacy Policy available at support.activision.com/license. Activision makes no warranties regarding the availability of the Online game or its functionality. The Online Service may, at its discretion, be modified or adjusted with reasonable prior notice, for example, due to economic reasons, by a limited number of players using the service."
OK....this is...so messed up. Activision is doing SOMETHING here...
Now...ok...if, somehow, Spyro's first game is as big as the limitations of a blue-ray (I...guess?). Ok, if that's true, then...couldn't fit 2 and 3 on it. HOWEVER....Why not simply just make 2 and 3 different discs? They ARE separate games after all. If they are really THAT big, they can make them that possible right? It's not like Xbox, where you have multiple discs for a SINGLE game. It's not that hard to put the data on separate discs is it? Anyone who purchased 1 at the full price for the THREE games...can just get the other two later, in a complete release, for free right?
But honestly, something like this is just wrong. There's a simple solution, JUST push back the release date, give Toys for Bob the TIME THEY NEED, and let them finish to put everything on one disc (which should be possible if they did it for Crash but...). But nope, doesn't matter. That means a mass recall of discs and cases and the like, and Activision is so petty on money, they actually got a patent to manipulate online multiplayer video games to get people to use micro-transactions (wonder when they'll start using that. Spyro Online everybody?). But it would fix the problems. Digitals are happy, physicals are happy, everybody wins. Well, aside from Activision. But hey, they're a big company, they can take it.
But yeah...something about Activision not guaranteeing support....and the fact people need a "guide" to download the games....something is wrong here. So actually, BOTH physical and digital people may be in danger here. If Activision just "decides" to pull support of Spyro (which seems unlikely, as his popularity, which Activision will use as a profit shield, will make that hard), they won't keep it up. If they decide to pull support, NOBODY will be able to get 2 and 3 then, even with the first game, and never will again if their hardware gets damaged or corrupted.
In fact, thinking about it...that disclaimer talk makes it sound vaguely like a THREAT by Actvision that people should buy Spyro or they'll take him out...
So, in the end, Activision either breaks even or wins, everybody else loses. If you DO get your physical (OR digital) copy, you say to Activision that they CAN screw with YOU and their developers, that they can put whatever release date they want, put it in whatever form they want, and lead you in THEIR direction for future practices. Essentially, you give permission to be screwed.
If you DON'T get your physical copy, and by extension, not the other games, Activision will be more inclined to drop any support for Spyro, and he'll be left in the dust (or Skylanders) again. And because Activision, according to the info on the back cover, outright states they would pull support from lack of usage, while people may be able to get Spyro's first adventure (at least), 2 and 3 will eventually no longer be downloadable. Toys for Bob looks to be doing a GREAT job, and seem dedicated to make Spyro right in his roots, and it would be a shame to have their efforts be discarded just because of their publisher.
So, submit to Activision of screwing with consumers...or let Spyro's revival be his last. Fail, Fail.
So yeah, it sucks, REALLY sucks, and there's no excuse for it. Toys for Bob is trying their best, but Activision has the dragon by the literal horns and is pushing him to come out early, causing disappointment among many fans. Like a lot of things in life, though, there's not much you can do. You can either pull out, or stick in and deal. Neither are good options really. You either bow to Activision, or Spyro gets shut down.
Personally I, regrettably, will probably KEEP my preorder for Spyro. I've NEVER had to download or patch anything to enjoy the games I've played (who can say THAT huh?), and I 100% do NOT agree with this stupid choice by Activision....but I still support what Toys for Bob, at least, is doing. It's wrong, I know, as Activision would get the lions share of whatever they make off the Reignited Trilogy-but-not-really-as-it's-just-one....and me saying "I'm doing it for Spyro" is just a way to console myself with the decision...
Oooooh...maybe later, MAYBE, if sales go well, they'll re-release it (maybe with extra DLC or such to round it out) in the future as a COMPLETE edition for the physicals, letting it be free for previous purchasers to make up for it................naaahh, Activision is human-run, and nowadays they don't make up for their mistakes. You'll pay full price for it all again. Yeah, either way, Digital or Physical, you're getting screwed, and Spyro's in the middle.
You know when you work hard, have a lot of setbacks, and have more of a life that's more about surviving than living? And one of the best ways to get through day-by-day is to have something to look forward to down the road, like some reward to make it all feel worth it?

Wow, long rant. So much wall of text.
But um, this is the standard norm. Many games, especially third party games, will just have the base game or first game of trilogy on the cartridge or disk. They don't put the whole game or trilogy on it due to size contracts and cost. Cheaper to just put part of the game then download it later. Saves them on manufacturing the disc or cartridge. And they don't pay extra fee for the size since say a 16 GB disc/cartridge cost more then a 4GB or 8GB.
And no company pushes back a release date. Unless it's a last resort, they just put the base game and have you download the rest of the game later. They know if they miss a release date, they loose relevence. Doesn't matter if they push the date back to fix something if no one is gonna play the game.
It's business. We may not like it, but that just how it is. Just got to adapt or move on to something else. Yes, sounds mean, but better then trying to fight for a change that won't happen.

I assume by the first game you mean Crash Bandicoot Trilogy? Even so, it just depends on whoever is in charge of the disk/cartridge system. They can either pay the extra money to have it all on one disk or pay less to have just the first 1 game on one disk. Then you just download the other 2 games.
I honestly prefer digital to physical. So much less hassle.

Correct, as I mentioned Crash is the only other example of this, and it is the same company. Given like I said, the other two games were built on the same engine so are slightly different, we can expect a series like Spyro that changed drastically to be 1st physical, rest digital.
I would hope they re-release the disk with all the games, if they release the series on other systems that way.

Damn it Activision, now I hate you more than EA again.
This isn't the first time they've kept most of the game on Digital Download. Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain had only like 14% of it's Disk Space used and required the rest to be downloaded.
Insane Spyro is probably going to explode when he sees this, if he hasn't already.

True, but i didnt go into the games expecting the exact same voices and looks as they did back on the ps1, i expected there to be changes to voices and looks. what color kind of remaster has the same graphics as its past self? I love everyones new looks, and while i was disappointed to not hear the same voices as before, i didnt automatically scream out that the reignited trilogy was terrible. You cant honestly expect everyone to return for this game, and keep in mind the hard work and constant pressure the game devs went through to make this happen, those of us on YouTube kept on pouring our hopes and dreams on them and they listened to us. the busted their butts for this game. even going so far as to move the games release date an extra two months. we as a fandom blew up on them for doing it and yet they kept going. And now after months of anticipation, the game is released and to my frustration and seathing rage, the fandom has split in half again! now there are classic,Legend, skylander, and now reignited fans! its a damn travesty and it breaks my heart to see this happen. If Spyro himself could see this he would bow his head cause he would be ashamed of us! Game development isnt like adding ones and twos, it takes years to create one damn game! So what if Spyro looks like a cartoon character now?! at least he isnt flat and blocky!!!! I....am sorry i let my inner Spyro is my bro and i will defend him forever part of me out.
You had me scared when I first saw this...my first thought was that they canceled the release of the game, then as I started reading I thought they releasing just the first game redone and not the other two. Sure the fact that the other two aren't going to be on the disc is disappointing but so long as I get them on my console I'm willing to put up with the fact that I have to download them. I definitely have the memory for it as I got a 3 TB external harddrive hooked up to my Xbox One. So I have plenty of space for the Spyro trilogy along with Odyssey, COD Black Ops 4, Fallout 76, Kingdom Hearts III, Resident Evil 2 remake, Biomutant, and One Piece World Seeker. Just so know those are the future games I'm planning to buy, also I've already set aside the money for the first four games in that list including Spyro.
