Max pressed his hands together, next to his mouth as he spat out a few embers. He was shaking inside of the ice path that was his only means of reaching Blackthorn city. While he could have transformed into his Guilmon form to resist the cold somewhat with the flame sac that was in his chest...he wasn't an official pokemon trainer in that form, and despite the red jacket he kept on at all times, the frigid air still managed to work it's way through every inch of his skin, leaving him a shivering mess.
Standing to his side, reaching up to his waist was Hackmon, a relatively young digimon at the rookie stage...He and his friends had first encountered the young digimon in the dark world. A nasty world that had been forgotten by the common digimon aside from those who lived within it. It had been training with it's mentor, Gankoomon until the eventual deletion of his body by the hands of his fellow royal knight, Kentaurosmon. Now, free from the clutches of the Dark world, Hackmon wanted to find his own answer as to what it means to be a Royal Knight, and to that end he has decided to become Max's new digimon partner so that he could discover that meaning.
Hackmon seemed for the most part, oblivious to the cold, unlike his half human companion. Then again...it wasn't his original body...he didn't understand the full scope of things but Leo and Bang's master had done something to Max...His human body was completely reconstructed and with nothing but the data that they had compiled from Seraphimon's egg who had been Daemon prior. It wasn't a complete match...as some of his human bodies data had been lost in the conversion...he no longer had the digital hazard mark on his cheek that he'd been born with. But he retained his bright blonde hair, and his brilliant blue eyes he had inherited from his mother, and being at just under 5.6 at 14, he didn't look bad at all. One drawback to the data conversion was that Max now had his flesh and blood body back but he was susceptible to extreme temperatures that he normally would have been able to withstand easily. In Guilmon form that was no problem...but right now he wasn't in that form. With a low sigh...the digimon tugged on Max's ripped blue jeans and stared at him with a look of concern. “Just transform into your Guilmon body. If I have to carry you out of this cavern I'm not gonna be happy.”
“I...w-w-will be f-f-f-f-fine! We just need to push on. Once we're out of this cavern we can get our last gym badge!” Max resisted, taking a few short steps, careful not to slip on the ice that this cave was notoriously known for...one wrong move and he'd slide right into a wall! Or a hole!” If there was one thing that hadn't changed in the data conversion...it was his stubbornness. He wasn't about to let this cold prevent him from achieving his goal. With a deep breath, he willed a veil of light to envelope him like a suit of armor. It staved off the cold just as he'd hoped it would and began moving much easier than prior. “If this cave didn't have such narrow pathways I'd call out Pyre...”
“Well it is tight...And we're not gonna get anywhere quickly with you slipping and sliding all over the place. Can't you use that light of yours to improve your traction over the ice?” Hackmon inquired, having been using his claws to keep himself from sliding all around. He was grateful that the ice had been several feet thick or he probably would have caused the ice around them to shatter and then they'd be in biiig trouble.
“Not really...I could use the light to step over the air if I maintain my concentration but on a slippery surface all I'd do is make it even more slippery.” Max explained, continuing their pace. “But...Maybe I can do something else...” He felt an idea forming in his head and smiled. “Hop on my back Hackmon...we're about to go flying!”
The small digimon gave Max a questioning look, but nodded, quickly climbing onto his Tamer's back and snickered as he realized small bits of light had formed around his claws to keep from tearing the fabric of his jacket. “You must really like this jacket...”
“Of course I do! After I outgrew my old one, Fang had spent time sewing a new one from scratch. A hard feat to do given he's a Zeedgarurumon now!” Max replied with a chuckle as he referenced his twin brother. His brother Fang had complications when they were born...as such a wolf by the name of Delta, managed to put his soul into that of a feral wolf cub. As time progressed, his human nature overcame the wolf and turned him into an anthropomorphic three tailed wolf. It hadn't been a painless process...as various red scars could be seen along his brother's fur coat when they'd first been reunited 4 years ago. When they went into the digital world, Fang had undergone an even more life altering transformation than Max EVER did. They were about to confront the source of the human and digital worlds corruption and to improve their chances of survival, Fang had been taken by their Uncle, below Starlight city where they Starlight cup had been held and allowed the young wolf to interact with the ancient spirit of Zeedgarurumon. ZeedGarurumon had accepted Fang's resolve without argument, and merged his soul with the young canine, forever transforming him into the mighty Zeedgarurumon and imbuing him with all the knowledge of the old warriors life. He'd never been the same after their final bout with the darkness...but his changes didn't change the fact that they were still brothers, even if fate had taken away their physical similarities.
With a breath, Max braced himself before a sheet of light energy formed beneath his feet and he was sent speeding along the icy path. It was worth it for Max to hear the startled reaction from Hackmon who clung tighter as they moved at a considerable speed, getting off Max's back now wasn't an option, and though he urged Max to stop using his light, he pressed on. “Don't worry...just hold on tight!” they were coming close to hitting a wall, and one with plenty of rugged spikes that formed around it! Just when they were 15 feet away from the wall, the light they were sliding on began to curve upward, actually forming a ramp over the wall and making a U like pattern as it began swerving to the left and back on the correct path. This went on for several minutes as Max basically used his light energy to form a slide that would allow them to quickly progress through the icy cavern and traverse it's many corners, while at the same time preventing the two of them from ever colliding with the walls or the stalagmites that decorated the surrounding area. Though it was a very effective means of travel, it couldn't last forever. Creating a steady stream of light energy for them to ride on was taxing on Max's reserves...He was used to using the light as a means to augment his physical abilities, but this was on a whole other level. He was outputting more reserves of his light energy by the minute, and after about five minutes of their quick trip through the caverns, the light that had been guiding them safely through had dissapated. His worn expression on his face testified to his weakened state and Hackmon was shouting for Max to slow down as they neared a wall and cringed as he felt his whole body vibrate as Max collided into a thankfully flat surface...but it definite took it's toll on Max who'd passed out from the impact combined with his fatigue.
“Hey now! You can't sleep in the cold Max! You'll freeze to death!” Hackmon hopped off Max's back and started smacking him a few times on the cheeks to wake him. “Max! I swear I'll eat you if you don't wake up!”
“...ax...max... Max!” He slowly started coming to. He could see the blurred image of Hackmon standing in front of him and his vision would eventually clear up just as the rookie had opened his mouth wide, strands of drool dripping down over's Max's head when he suddenly brought his hands up to keep Hackmon's jaws from coming over him. “Gah! No way! You had fish an hour ago! I'm not going in there with you smelling all fishy!” Max cried out, pushing Hackmon away and slowly sitting upright, watching the small dragon type digimon snap his claws as if he were disappointed he couldn't get his mits on Max.
“You overdid it didn't you? Used up too much of your light energy to get us out of here...how far in are we now?” Hackmon asked, smacking his lips a few times to get over the taste of Max's hands over them and grinned. “And by the way...you would have frozen do death if you remained out of it! I'd make sure you became a digiegg in my stomach before I let you become one out here out of frostbite.”
Upon hearing the question about how far they were, Max took out his pokegear, which thanks to his Uncle Smithy...the creator of the Digivice, he'd managed to alter his Pokegear so it functioned as it should in this world and as a Digivice of his own design. Sure his uncle had suggested that seperating the two would have been an easier job, Max was adamant on keeping as few devices on him as possible...especially since the new digivices that Smithy had made didn't simply vanish with the use of light energy. They were physical devices that would need to remain clipped onto a belt or another portion of their body or kept in a pocket. He watched as a holo view of the ice cavern popped out of his pokegear and zoomed the image back a bit so he could get a better idea of how far they'd gotten. “We're halfway in...But we've crossed the most dangerous sections of the cavern. If we go slow...we should make it out of here in about half an hour or so.”
“Half an hour? With your reserves of light energy drained, do you even HAVE thirty minutes in here? You'd be better of resting inside me where it's warm. At least in there you can recover while I get us out of here. It's not like some hot chocolate is waiting in here for you.” Hackmon remarked a low growl, then as if to prove him wrong, he watched a Delibird just walk right up to the duo and toss a present in Max's lap. It looked to him expectantly as if wanting him to open the box right away. “I think it wants you to open it.”
“Yeah...but Delibird gifts usually end with a bang...” Max remarked, hesitantly removing the wrapper and blinked as he found a thermos sitting in the box. It was warm too! He carefully lifted it up and twisted the lid open and poured what looked to be a nice piping hot cup of hot chocolate, steaming right in the mug. He quickly took a sip and felt relief as the cold started melting away from his body. The delibird looked delighted that Max had accepted his gift and waved his paws at him.
“Warm and toasty now? You should always pack something warm to drink down here!” The Delibird giggled, handing Hackmon a box as well, inside of it was another thermos packed with hot chocolate...how the bird managed to get such things in here was beyond the duo but the meaning was well enough. “Say...are you two going anywhere in particular?”
Both Hackmon and Max looked at one another, with the latter having to translate what the Delibird had said, since it was speaking in it's own pokemon language...Max had a knack of understanding pokespeak as if it were plain english so he answered for the both of them. “We're heading to Blackthorn city. We need to go there so that we can go to the Silver conference! I missed it last year.”
“Oh! So you're a Pokemon trainer! We get a lot of those passing through here. I see your kind all the time but I've never seen one so clumsy as to crash so hard into the wall like that!” The Delibird giggled some more, it was apparent by the tone of it's voice and the way it carried itself, this Delibird was female. “Can I come with you?” The Delibird asked Max, a goofy grin on it's face. “I only know two attacks...I can't learn any more without the help of a trainer.”
Max had taken a few more sips of the hot chocolate, letting it fill his body with warmth before he closed up the thermos again...he didn't want the contents getting chilly too quickly. “Haven't you asked any other trainers? None of them have tried to capture you?”
“You'd think they would...but they're all weary about having a pokemon that only knows how to use the move Present. If a trainer was willing to WORK with me then maybe I could learn a few more moves. Plus...unlike the other trainers that pass through, you don't seem...like you'll make it in here on your own.” The Delibird remarked plain as day, as if nothing could have been more accurate. “So...can I come with you?”
“Uhh yeah. Sure you can come!” Max smiled wide, holding out a pokeball in his hand. “So you just want to hop on in?” Max asked, holding out the ball to the Delibird. “I'm sure you'll be a big help in the Johto league. And it's always nice to have new friends to travel with.”
“Yeah!” The Delibird seemed even chipper! If that was even possible...and pecked at the ball that was set out in front of him. A bright red light enveloped the bird pokemon and after a few wiggling motions from the ball, it sparkled to indicate capture.
“Heh I didn't expect a pokemon like that to come waddling up to us. Did I really look that pathetic?” Max asked, setting the thermos in the side pocket of his backpack, doing the same for Hackmon's on the other side.
“You looked as you always do...So that would be a yes.” Hackmon huffed, turning to the side and gave Max a poke on his leg, the claw breaking through the fabric to send a small jolt of pain through his thigh. “Come on. Before you do any sort of training with your new birdie friend, we need to get out of here. Are you sure you don't want to ride in my stomach?”
Max looked like he was considering it this time, looking down at his partner and then shook the thought away as he realized what had happened a moment ago. “You just want me to burn inside your stomach! You just had hot chocolate!”
“Heh...think of it as extreme training for your new body...get yourself used to extreme heat.” Hackmon's toothy grin showed just how serious the dragon type digimon was with his statement, but didn't push it any further as they continued their way out of the cave.
“Why are you always trying to eat me?” Max asked, keeping the Delibird's ball in his hand a few moments longer before shrinking it down and clipping it to his belt, which had five other balls neatly arranged in a row. “And now we have six pokemon in our party. I wonder if it was a good idea storing away some of them in the PC before we left. I kind of miss them.”
Hackmon ignored Max as they rounded a corner...for the most part their conversations always started out like this...Since they were partnered two years ago, there hadn't been a day that went by where he hadn't tried to eat Max. And every time Max asked, he always had the same response to him, once they were near the caverns end, and they could see the light coming out of the exit, he finally responded with his usual answer. “Because...you know I love spicy food and you're the spiciest thing I know. And you know we had to put some of them away, They weren't equipped for a battle with a Dragon type gym leader. And I doubt you want to see them in any more pain than they have to endure do you?”
Hackmon had a point...and Max had the same train of thought when he'd transferred some of his pokemon back to the professor back at his hometown. It didn't make him any happier doing it though. He thought of all the Pokemon he'd captured as his family and friends, and it hurt him to remain a part from them. After a few more minutes of treading the slippery ice, the duo finally made it out of the ice cavern, only to find themselves in what appeared to be a barren desert. It took him a few minutes to adjust to the sun after being cooped up in the cave for so long, but eventually Max could make out the buildings that stood out just a few miles away from where they were currently.
With his stamina having made somewhat of a come back, Max started sprinting down the sandy path along with Hackmon who seemed equally relieved to be out of the harsh frozen cave but both stopped in their tracks when they found something neither of them quite expected. Sitting just outside of the town of Blackthorn, etched into the ground or rather it looked like it had been completely burned into it by a fire...was the crest of courage. Why was it sitting here? It spanned at least a hundred feet across, taking up the size of what would have been a pokemon battle arena and when Max went to touch the indentation within the ground he found that it still burned. This crest hadn't been here for long. “It's hot...” He looked at his hand, which had transformed into a guilmon's claw upon contact...That settled it. There was a digimon somewhere in their midst...But was it a good one...or a bad one? Max didn't know.
“Is this another sign?” Hackmon asked, leaning in closer to get a look at the crest but was careful not to make contact with it. Max's interaction with the crest was odd enough...his body only transformed against his will whenever there's a trigger...like hot flames...There was no doubt this crest emitted heat on it's own but it shouldn't have triggered his transformation even partially. “Let's go into the city. You wanted to battle the blackthorn city gym leader right? Maybe we can ask them if they saw what caused this mark.”
“Yeah...” Max pulled himself back up, and started walking around the crest...given it's size it took them a minute or two to deviate from their path. It didn't take cost them TOO much time and they were in the city by the time the sun was beginning to set. “We'll get some rest at the Pokemon Center and challenge the gym leader, first thing in the morning.”
Hackmon didn't argue but his stomach certainly did. He held back for the time being as they checked into the pokemon center. Max handed the Nurse his belt which contained his pokemon before receiving a key by the nurse to their bedroom. “Well we may as well get some rest now.” Max smiled, holding the key out infront of Hackmon before leading his companion down the hall into a simplistic looking bedroom with a bunk bed. One for each of them to sleep on. Though Hackmon had other plans, and as soon as their room was shut, Hackmon had immediately pounced on his unsuspecting partner, having clung to his back, he wasn't about to let go now. “Ack! Hackmon! Now's not the time!”
“It's the perfect time Max...I'm hungry, and I can tell you're still a bit shaken by the cold in the cavern. I'll warm you up reeeal nice.” Hackmon chuckled softly, giving Max a teasing lick across the cheek, leaving a small bit of drool over his face. “I'm putting you to bed for the night...” With a wide yawn, the dragon digimon had opened his jaws wide, already stuffing Max's head into that hungry cavern.
“Mmph! Hey!” Max cried out, confirming his suspicion...the Hackmon's breath smelled heavily of the fish they'd had for lunch earlier this day. Still, Max had placed his pokeballs in nurse joy's hands, he knew that this would come to happen. Sometimes Hackmon's appetite just got the better of him and he'd either way up in the dragon's stomach in the middle of the night when it got this bad...or he'd end up fighting the dragon all night and get little to no sleep. That didn't keep Max from putting up a fight though as his head pressed deep against the dragon's meaty tongue, which tasted all over his face to get his spicy flavor out before a gentle tug ended up pulling his head down that tight gullet.
Despite wearing a cape that generally kept his body hidden, Hackmon had a hard time hiding the bulge that was traveling down his neck. But given Max always locked their bedroom door in pokemon centers, he hadn't even bothered to try! Keeping his claws around Max's shoulders, pinning them down so the human couldn't break free from his hungry grasp, he suddenly swallowed hard, working in those shoulders as his jaws stretched almost impossibly wide to accept them! This was the hard part...and with it being done so quickly, he knew he'd be able to enjoy the rest of his meal with relative comfort.
For Max it wasn't much of a comfortable ride...he did enjoy the warmth that the dragon's body provided, but it almost always was a trip that was done against his will. Each swallow tugged him deeper into Hackmon's body into his head came across some resistance...his head slowly pushed it's way through the sphincter that seperated Hackmon's gullet with his stomach which reeked heavily of fish...not to mention he could hear the sloshing of liquids down below and knew that might very well have been the hot chocolate that Hackmon had finished consuming just before they walked into the city. Gritting his teeth, he waited until his head splashed into the hot liquid, any shouting he made was turned into bubbles as he dipped into the hot chocolate that had filled the stomach chamber.
He wouldn't have to be submerged for long thankfully! Hackmon was quickly working down his spicy human meal as he pushed down Max's legs to get the last of his tamer down that hungry gullet of his and felt his gut ballooning with the human that now occupied it. Hackmon let loose a loud rumbling belch as he lay there in the middle of the floor. “Oooogh...That was great! Thanks Max...You're always the best meal I could ever have!”
Max had to curl up pretty tightly inside of Hackmon's stomach...he groaned as the hot liquids sloshed around his body, but the tightness of the belly made it hard for him to do anything but wiggle in place. Even his shouting was muffled, which made it very difficult for his partner to hear anything. Suddenly...he felt everything moving around him and realized that Hackmon had just climbed into the bed to rest. Another belch rumbled around him as he heard faint muffled remarks from Hackmon on the outside.
“Don't worry, I haven't forgotten Pyre's lessons. Sleep well Max...” Despite his aggression when devouring his tamer, he held a certain fondness for him as well. Max had never once tried to change the small dragon's ways...and had accepted him the way he was right from the start. Sure he could be a bit mean...insulting Max from time to time during their travels but he really did care for the boy. And they were both traveling for the same reasons...To discover what it means to be a knight.
