Yea that is a wolf and yes he is sniffing my hand.
His name is Luke actually.
HE IS NOT A PET!
He is the product of someone thinking a wolf would make a great pet and realizing how they're not great pets. He cannot be released in the wild and it is assumed he's part dog of some sort.
I DO NOT APPROVE OF OWNING WILD ANIMALS AS PETS. No need to tell me how you want a wolf as a pet. They'll end up like this poor guy in a sanctuary.. if they're lucky. Most end up dead.
If you love them work to save the habitat and work towards saving them in the wild. It's where they belong.

There is a folder at the bottom of the page DO NOT click it unless you want to see 20 pictures of me and the other students cutting up a steer. It's very gory and I warned you.

Note: I DO NOT want to hear comments about how sexy you think these animals are. Raping animals is sick and I will report you perverts.
Thank you.

It's sad to see how many wolves they have... sadder to hear how many they have to turn down do to lack of space for them.
I'd much rather see wolves wild here... they were once and maybe if people stop trying to keep them as pets and work to save them they will be again.

I actually care for a wild wolf/cyote/dog who had the same thing happen to him. His name is Baxter, and he had to learn how to howl from our other dogs. he's a real sweetheart.
our border-collie, Bianka, hated him and wouldn't let him anywhere near us for a few months. now they are best friends.
good for you, looking out for Luke!

Wolves can howl naturally without really learning. To them barking is done as a sign of fear but if they're part dog barking is common.
I'm glad he was saved from a tragic death. Sadly this sanctuary is too far for me to go often but I plan to spend a few weekend a summer out there helping out.

The closest I came to a wild carnivore was while hunting. An absolutely beautiful cougar ran past me only teen feet away while I was watching over a shale clearing. After it got about 50 feet away it dropped from a run to a saunter and kept looking back at me with lovely blue eyes. I could have shot it at any time but had no interest in doing so. My stepdad, who was a couple of "hogsback" hills away saw the whole thing and was angry that I didn't kill it. He wanted a trophy and the local beef ranchers had a 500 dollar reward out to bag cougars in the area. I've hunted only for food and hate the idea of killng for sport. He wouldn't take me hunting afterwards and I didn't care,
Yea, the janitor at my college has a wolf hybrid and has had her for 11 years.
I honestly don't believe in even breeding them or hybrids as pets right now. They should be focusing on getting them back into the wild. I wish Colorado had wild wolves. We did once before.
--
Thank you for caring for the hybrid though, this place gets so many calls they can't do anything about because people change their minds after getting one and realizing they take more work than most domesticated dogs.

There is a wolf sanctuary ( Lakota Wolf Preserve ) about 2 hours from here and as an Anniversary present, Bunny took me a year ago. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life, and having them all howl around us was amazing. Unfortunately, all the wolves were there because of humans. Either they were pets, or seriously injured in traps and unable to live in the wild, or part of a circus act in another country or in the backasscrack of the US. Its so sad. They are only allowed to keep 16, and are constantly getting mail from those who found beaten, abused, lost, wolves who need a home. =( The wolves can never have cubs because its dangerous to let them breed and be captured like that for no reason, and the state has threatened to take away their license if they have over 16 wolves.
I totally agree with you, on your views. Owning a wild animal, that deserves to be free is cruel, and then bad things happen to them when you realize its too late. =( The Lakota Wolf Preserve pays their bills by charging for educational walkthroughs, and to camp next to the wolf preserve. They also had 3 foxes, and 2 Bobcats. =( Unfortunately they were all sort of tame but very dangerous because of their "pet" up bringings. =(

I think they have so little because its Pennsylvania, its not normal Wolf territory, and if theres a chance of one of them getting out, and mating with a dog or something, it could be dangerous. =(
Yeah, their males were fixed as well. When they first started the pack had pups but a lot of them died because the wolves didn't know how to care for the young ( never having a pack life, until then ) and they would try to hide them from the care takers. =( It was safer and smarter.

Ever howl with them? Now that's an experience not too easily forgotten. I spent three years of my life attending VCC, a college in Ely, MN right across from the International Wolf Center (wolf.org). Many evenings I'd walk down the woodsy trail to an overlook and howl, and they'd always answer with a beautiful chorus. Unbelievable. :)
I like the part about protecting their habitat. It's the most important form of conservation - without the land, you, can't support the animals themselves in their natural environment. I'm thankful we're going to school for the same thing, on that regard. I'm also thankful you're so strong willed to say stuff like that to people who may not think about that concept. Keep up the great work Mazz. ^^
