Humanity had been used to believe that the life on Earth was already pretty well-known; it was quite a shock to learn that there were colossal radiotrophs living just below their radar. Mutos were the first species that became known to the public, their name stemming from the MUTO abbreviation (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) used by their secret researchers and quickly adopted as the species name by the military trying to hunt the two known specimens down.
While MUTOS have been known from before, studied by the secret organisation known as Monarch, most of them do not possess a full MUTO symbiote complex, which is necessary to reach the enormous sizes seen in the species with a full complex.
Mutos have a bizarre appearance and an even stranger life cycle, unlike any known vertebrate. While their looks had been described as being reminiscent of arthropods or aliens, they are in fact highly-derived terrestrial placoderms with strong chimera virus influence.
Being unusually dependant on radiation even for titan-type MUTO standards, Mutos require a strong radiation source to incubate their eggs on. It is speculated their natural nesting material were the bones of other titan-types, but in the described case it was demonstrated that a damaged atomic bomb is also suitable. The hatchlings resemble smaller, thinner and wingless adults, but that is where the similarities to adults in their life cycle ends – the nymphs will search out a radiotrophic host, burrow into its body and will develop for several decades while changing into a fat, unmoving form, feeding off the host's radiation reserves until they are big enough. Then they will eat the host from the inside out, killing it in the process and pupate either directly on the corpse or somewhere with enough ambient radiation. Usually, there is only one nymph per host, as being parasitized by several nymphs can lead to the host's premature death. The adults are predatory and live in pairs; once hatched from the cocoon, a Muto will seek out a partner, communicating with them over long distances with infrasound calls. Both their monogamous nature as well as their sexual dimorphism ties into their peculiar hunting habits; while males can dive for smaller prey or take down airborne creatures by damaging their wings in flight and females are able to sneak up on terrestrial prey by imitating their calls, a pair will predominantly attack large, slow and armoured titan-type MUTOs. Males will serve mostly as distraction and attempt to destabilize their prey, while the larger and stronger females will attempt to throw it on the side or back and once downed, the hard, sharp finger tips of the walking arms will be used to stab the prey to death. The carcass will be fed on by the adults and the bones, which are also used for storing radioactive materials by titan-types, will be used as substrate for the eggs. The adults will remain close by the nest and leave once the nymphs have hatched and dispersed to search for another victim.
Mutos have a surprisingly fast development rate for a creature this size, which is most likely connected to their parasitic lifestyle and the reason why they are dependent on strong radiation sources, but they are also able to lay dormant for extended periods; the Jira remains discovered in the Philippines where the two known specimens had been found was embedded in sediments dated to be of lower Rupelian (32 Ma) origin.
For unknown reasons, Mutos are blind and rely completely on echolocation to orient themselves. This seems to be the reason for their weirdly angular appearance, as the sound reflections would make them recognizeable from large distances. They are also possessing a keen radiation sense to locate food sources.
An unexpected and remarkable ability is to create electromagnetic pulses strong enough to knock out military vessels. The male will announce a pulse with red bioluminescence on the lower front legs, while the much stronger pulses of the female happen unannounced. Its purpose is most likely to disable the magnetic sense of other MUTOs and cause disorientation, but the two known specimens have quickly learned to take out military planes and other machines this way. The process these EMPs are produced with is largely unknown; it is assumed that it is produced in an organ with a similar structure to the electrical organs found in several fish taxa within the front leg, possibly by utilizing β-radiation from the radioactive material they consume.
Mutos and Jiras have a peculiar relationship: while young Jiras are usually targeted as prey by Muto pairs and seem to be preferred prey, the old, large specimens seem to have a sort of intense hate for Mutos, going out of their way to kill any they encounter by following the infrasound contact calls. The events that transpired in Hawaii and San Francisco were a demonstration of this behaviour, albeit the two individuals had become freakishly large due to being fed concentrations of radiation much higher than they would usually encounter in their natural environment and would have turned the tables on their pursuiter if their nest would not have been destroyed.
Thanks to popular demand, I'm going to cover the G14 monsters as well. There isn't that much to complain about (in fact, the speculative K:SI bullshit was mostly about bringing the movie's monsters to the bullshit level established by G14 rather than attempting to make them truly realistic), just a little bit of nitpicking and attempts to explain their features. Since the whole speculative fandom bullshit started with them, I will just link the previous bullshitting about the development, skeleton and the logic behind assigning them to placoderms rather than explaining it in-depth in the text: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15578945/ http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16917883/

-The mouth doesn't gape when closed any more

Awesome. I look forward to more of this.
On a topic we had discussed in regards to Ghidorah, they are mentioning that he has actual gold in his scales to serve as a conducting agent and that his flight is partly achieved through electromagnetism, though a byproduct of that is causing an electrical storm the likes of which humanity has never seen. That said, they also list that the origin of the creature isn't known as it doesn't remotely match anything, even in the radiotrophs that have been discovered thus far and his size is obscene for a terrestrial creature. The speculation of him being an alien is likely to be brought up, though a better idea (and a largely more terrifying idea) is that his origin is simply never confirmed.
On another note, I was surprised to learn that the original Rodan was going to look like an archeopteryx, but the feather work would have taken too long/been too difficult, so they settled on a pterosaur basis. The 2019 Rodan seems to be a blend of both with a seemingly pterosaur wing structure comprised of a type of feather-like structure that keeps molten magma inside of the wing. It seems like it is to give the idea of a hot air balloon crossed with a rocket powered jet while combining it with the volcano aspects and phoenix mythos.

Having a non-confirmed origin is the best for Ghidorah, as I think the alien origin is a pretty stupid idea. He's too vertebrate-like for an alien and assuming travelling encased in a meteorite is a feasible way to move through the universe utterly ignores the vastness of space. I was thinking if that meteorite thing would be used, that he could have been from Earth, but was thrown off the planet during a meteor impact, survived by lying dormant in space, then came back down millions of years later. Alternatively, he is a one-of-a-kind freak of nature, an oversized set of siamese triplets that somehow managed to not only survive its deformations, but use them to its own advantage.
Yes, I'm glad they didn't go for oversized pterosaur in Rodan's design. I like the spade-like tail in particular.

I completely agree. Ghidorah as a wild animal makes no sense for it to be an alien. The only way that is even a possibility is if Ghidorah was already a vangard of a rather close race of alien invaders, though I think they are banking on the the "we can only speculate". Feathers in this cap is that he is evident through all of human's history and they tie him back to the hydra, Yamata No Orochi, and even the rainbow serpent. There IS a mention that the three heads have varying levels of intelligence and the middle head is claimed to be smarter. Also, snippits from the trailer and interviews give rise to the idea that this movie starts off with another monster not yet listed attacking humanity. The trailer showcases armed soldiers entering Ghidorah's containment facility with dead people all over the place. The snippit of the lady "pressing a button and the volcano erupts" is actually the lady pressing the button in Ghidorah's containment area. Combine this with the writer saying "something from the Skull island movie will show up" and that he wanted to address how humans built up religions around these creatures and the ending of 2014 with people cheering for Godzilla as he returned to sea, and I am foreseeing the idea that something like Skullcrawlers (big ones) or another MUTO titan is attacking to the point the people at Ghidorah's containment foresee little choice but to release him and HOPE he'll kill the other monster. Naturally he does, but unlike Kong or Godzilla who is fine taking a nap afterwards or otherwise returning to where he came, Ghidorah proceeds to terraform the planet to his liking, which is akin to a proverbial overnight extinction event. I think it is something of a requirement to showcase how dangerous Ghidorah is by having him absolutely murder a lesser monster to drive home how downright dangerous he is to even other titan class creatures.
I agree, Rodan looks downright impressive, which is fitting as the goal here was to return Rodan to his Showa incarnation in terms of strength, making him around on-par with Godzilla.
Mothra is also getting a showa style treatment and her official title is "Queen of the Monsters". She apparently weaponizes "beta waves" into light beams fired from the eyespots in her wings. Will be interesting to see what her Imago form's aspects look like more clearly.
