Splat posted this tweet and the second I saw it I knew I had to get a pair of my own! I went to
magferret for the design as I knew his cartoon style would fit these perfectly. Sure enough, the pattern he made was exactly what I had in mind for this. I am very, very pleased with the result of these and I will consider getting another pair down the line featuring my Badger character/fursona 'Bax'!
LOOKING TO GET A PAIR LIKE THIS? IMPORTANT INFO BELOW!!
Vans Customs can be ordered on Vans' official website (only 'Authentic' and 'Classic Slip-On' can be customized with images). They are $85 USD. If you are a non-US citizen, check if Vans has a domestic website you can order Customs from.
While I do encourage anyone who can/wants to get something like this yourself, be warned that the process of ordering these can become very tricky. In my case, what ended up happening was my order got cancelled by Vans a couple of days after making it. No explaination followed, so I emailed them to ask what happened. Turns out that they were concerned I didn't have the rights to use the art/character.
It's obvious to us that I do. Levi is my creation and Mag was commissioned with the intent of using the art to make these shoes, which he was fully aware of. However, Vans is a large company and obviously would rather err on the side of caution than to risk a lawsuit because they took a chance on some obscure character they didn't recognize. They asked for proof that I had the rights to use the art. Luckily Mag had WIP shots of the project and wrote up a document with undeniable proof that I was allowed to use the art pretty much however I please. It took a bit over a month and the involvement of Vans' legal team, but eventually the image got whitelisted.
HOW DO I GO ABOUT ORDERING THESE WITHOUT RISKING A CANCELLED ORDER?
I can't guarantee your design will be whitelisted by Vans, but I can tell you how to minimize the risk of having your order be cancelled.
1. Draw or commission art specifically to be used for the shoes.
If you use art you already have it can prove difficult to prove it's yours to use unless you are friends with the artist and know they have WIP shots of the art (note; these WIP shots should be unique and seen only by the artist, anyone can screenshot a livestream).
2. Check the artists ToS before commissioning.
Some artists do not allow their art to be reprinted by their clients. Always check this FIRST (just read their ToS in general before commissioning any artist, saves you a lot of trouble). If they don't allow their art to be reprinted, you can try step 3 which we'll get to right now.
3. Involve the artist.
This is the most important step. Explain what the commission is for, and make sure they are okay with you using them for making a pair of custom sneakers. You should prepare them for the possibility that you may need proof to use the art. I'd just link them to read this submission so they know full and well what they are getting themselves into.
4. Contact Vans BEFORE ORDERING!
Just get in touch with their support beforehand, explain you don't want to risk cancellation and show them the image as well as explain you have the rights to use the image.
By doing this I don't see any reason why your image would get cancelled. I know it's a lot to keep track of but the result was completely worth it to me. Hope you found this helpful!
