The story continues. Brad, desperate to get his mind off his new appendages, starts an argument with James. Of course, during that distraction, he misses his nose suddenly lengthening into a snout and a nice bushy beard growing all around his lower face. It isn't until James notices that Brad is brought back to the gravity of his situation.
Heh. It's funny when i think about it.
See, I've been to a planet. Long ways away from this one. In its jungle terrain, they have this parasitic insect that burrows its way into its host. Then, it proceeds to transform its host, slowly and gradually, into a much larger version of itself, which it then takes over and repeats the process anew with increasingly larger hosts.
During that, though, it leaves the host's brain intact so it could continue maintaining its more internal functions necessary for survival, such as breathing and beating heart. It also maintains control of its body for a while so the parasite can learn about its habits and capabilities for survival. After it takes over, the host mind is left alive inside for the internal stuff, meaning that it actually becomes the parasite and the parasite becomes the host.
Because it happens so slowly, the original host never actually notices this until it gets disconnected. In fact, partway through, they may experience surges of increased strength and agility, aiding them in their natural hunting routines. It attributes to increased success, and they get a heightened sense of ability. Then they realize what's actually happening to them, and... well, there's usually a reaction.
I often wonder if any of Adomm's canvases experience this sort of thing before she completes her work. Excited about becoming more able in some ways, and their emotions suddenly flipping around when they find it's attributed to them no longer having any parts of their original body.
... wait, what was I talking about again?
Oh yeah. Brad's slowly turning into a fox, and tensions fly. Exciting.

I think it's more to do with their status in a society where other beings are either stereo-typically domesticated for mass harvest, deemed down as mere pets, or picked out in the wild as target practice. You don't often see horses walking around with briefcases, shaking hands with potential clients in a business meeting, for example. Not sure if it's need for want, or simply the inability to communicate properly.
... although, if Adomm gets in one of her moods, that might be easily remedied.

Settle down Brad. Humans aren't at the top of the food chain, either.
Also, as far as targeted ads go, and their ties to programs, services and products, I wouldn't use the word conspiracy. Internet giants admit to it. Everybody talks about it. Demonstrating it's existence is pretty easy. Even now, as I type, there's a little bar asking me to consent to this site's cookies.
I just think of it like a silent tour guide with a 'help me help you' attitude... that jumps the shark a lot...takes everything at face value...talks about you behind your back...and may get you swept up in something you never wanted to be in. Yeah we should definitely keep a close eye on that. That and Internet Rep Management.

Yes, I was wondering why he was saying stuff like that.
There are humans out there who tend to habitually think in dynamic absolutes. Either something is right, or something is wrong. And more than often, they do not like being wrong, so they adamantly hold onto the belief and try their best to affirm it is right, no matter what sort of evidence is provided on the contrary.
And when their nose inexplicably stretches out to three times its original length, their natural instinct is to hold even tighter to what they know is true so that they are returned to their comfort zone.
Interesting creatures, humans. Not the only creatures like that, mind; I've seen beings that you could throw off a cliff and they would still reject the concept of gravity even beyond the big splat at the end. Humans are sort of in that happy medium range. Some are adaptable, some not, but there's always a way to convince them of something.
