A closer look at each critter featured in my new Redwall size chart! Here is a long waterdog.
Probably best known for being nautical-themed and eating spicy things, otters are another staple of the Redwall books, and I think it's interesting that they're universally 'good guys' even though they are the larger, more slippery cousins of weasels and ferrets and the like. They even tried to raise an otter as a bad guy in one book and it didn't work! Otters are cute, sure, but aren't other mustelids just as adorable with their little noodle bodies and beady eyes? If you're going to make all your critters good or evil based on their visual appeal then we don't have nearly enough nice stoats running around Mossflower.

Now this is a charming fellow, he looks like he'd be a nice chap to spend an evening fishing with on the river.
I totally agree that there should have been good stoats. Like you said with the evil otter not working, I also really dislike how much all the "evil" species are just iredeemable. The whole plotline with Veil Sixclaw in particular was really frustrating.

I recently wrote up a whole in-depth review on Outcast of Redwall (i'd like to do one for each book eventually!) and I agree, for all that the story is named after him Veil isn't all he's hyped up to be. He's not the most interesting character, he's not even the second most interesting ferret in the book.
Fortunately we got Romsca immediately afterwards, almost like Brian was saying "sorry about the last guy."

Blaggut got a happy ending! Ashleg also Managed To Avoid Dying (and if he never really had a 'redemption' arc then it's because he was barely a bad guy to begin with).
What we got to see of Romsca was excellent, but yes, in a perfect world she would have gone on to party at Redwall and go on more adventures. X( Female baddies in the series are pretty rare in general, much less ones with any sort of nuance to them, much less ones who turn their shit around. We need more of those and less of... everything else
