I love the story of Red XII.. AKA Nanaki..

Battered, and abused by a mad scientist who wishes to preserve his species, he ends up being the quiet, and wise observer of the world of Gaia..

In the end when humanity is over, he is seen with his cubs, observing the ruins of Midgar, with his pups..

His species survived.. but only with the eradication of humanity..

I still can't help but think that his character longs for his old friends.. and that he might wish the earth were still filled with humans that were like them..
