Normally i hate Yellow jackets. one of the only life forms on the planet i ever hated with such a passion that i committed what would amount to war crimes if i did it to people*. but then one can develop a rather nasty hatred of things that once bit them in the open eye in the pupil. and having been always attacked by them since i was very little even if one was flying by my hatred of them grew and grew. However that all changed a few years back. there was a nest that i did not know about near my chair outside in my little hidey hole where i used to live. i had recently learned that if one surrounds a hibernating nest with say an old t-shirt or something that has your scent on it that it works on the hibernating insects subtly and they wake up thinking you are a nest mate. well i had placed a blanket on the chair so i could be warm during the winter when i would go out and sit. well it worked without me knowing. the next spring there they were. i was ready to kill them all with fire and hate and they did not bother me. so i decided not to do anything. still later that year they would crawl on me. even though i was basically sitting on their nest. and they once (not that it was great for him) decided to defend me from the mail man when he tried handing me mail.. since that point none have tried to do anything other than land on me. no bites or stings. i still sometimes get really nervous around them but it is not as bad as it was. and so i was content to just watch this guy with an eye to make sure the waves did not reach up and take him again.
* i once camped out near a nest with a bb gun and shot every single one that left the nest. gethered up the bodies near dusk. took an old plastic coffee can lid and stuck pins up through it and then impaled thier heads on them and put it near the nest...

well had the vendetta. never really got a real phobia thought a sudden yellowjacket in the face will still get me to recoil. strangely wasps and bees almost never get a negative reaction from me even if they sting me. though in every single case i can remember only twice out of the many times that i have been stung or bit was it uncalled for. versus every single time with yellowjackets where i was doing nothing.
It was always the 'Young' ones that were aggressive. We had a concrete birdbath that was probably the only water source for a mile, and I was constantly fishing out insects from it. Bees you scoop and toss. Older hornets will actually sit in your hand, clean themselves and fly off. It's always the 'little' ones that want to bite and sting... If they really bother you - Hang a piece of meat over a bucket of water.
