With Me
"Home sweet home, I guess." Philei announces as she eases her grip on Picaro's shoulders, having firmly guided the boy away from his home. After a literal decade of separation, all she wanted in the world was to be alone with her son. Nothing else mattered. This was what would make her life mean something.
"WHOA! You sleep in a car, too?!" The young boy enthusiastically inquires, rushing over to slam his tail on the hood of the rusty old car. The derilict vehicle, lost in the middle of the woods, seemingly abandoned for as long as Philei had been alive, even, was the closest thing the woman had to a home right now. At least the windows weren't shattered. "Mine's made of plastic, though. This is so cool though!"
"Y-Yeah. Cool." Philei flatly responds, wondering if the kid's just excited to finally meet his mom... Or if he's really that oblivious. The Goodra girl keeping an eye on him seemed kind of ditzy. She was glad to have... Torn him, from that warm, loving home to live here in a, uh... Old, worn down car. Yeah. Totally the right move, Philei. "Uh. You ate before we left, right?"
"Nope! What's for dinner? Do they deliver pizza to cars in the woods?" God, this kid really was that oblivious, wasn't he? Someone's gotta teach him the harsh reality of the world. The world that's wronged her so much for so long. And yet... She has a hard time slamming down with the hard "No."
After a few moments of hesitation and thought, Philei answers, "we'll go out for breakfast in the morning. It's late. You gotta sleep. Did you bring pajamas...?" She glances uncertainly at the little bindle her son's packed for running away from home. Untying it revealed only his Gameboy, a couple batteries, some games, and a juice box. Maaaaaybe leaving in such a hurry wasn't such a good idea. "You know what? I think my old shorts'll fit."
She can't even bear to watch the kid change, let alone make sure her old clothes fit him. It all felt so... Natural, yet unnatural. This was her own flesh and blood, yet a complete stranger.
And he trusted her.
Based off nothing but a familiar scent, he trusted her wholeheartedly. Despite the outlandishness of her story, knowing the birthday even he didn't know, this kid truly, truly believed her. Even the Goodra was skeptical, and she was an idiot! There wasn't a doubt in Philei's mind, though. The kid's lanky, sickly appearance, the scent of Nihilego's poison on his skin, it all reminded her of the baby she was forced to abandon.
The shorts fit like a glove. And the flannel the boy had used for his bindle made for good sleeping clothes, even if it was a bit loose and torn here and there. "This was my trainer's! He's my best friend and, like, kind of my dad but not really since you're here now and dad's gonna be home any minute and does dad look cool is he super buff and-"
Such a chatty kid, too. Philei can't believe this kid never seems to run out of questions, even if she can understand how weird this situation is. Being taken from home, sleeping with your mom you've never met's car, having to move out of a -perfectly good house- to live in the woods. "I'll tell you about him in the morning, kid. Just sleep."
"Okay, Mom."
Mom. That soon? He'd really accepted that fact this soon, so suddenly? Is this what unconditional love feels like? Philei can't even comprehend why that word makes her chest just... Well up, with something. Her lips purse into a slight smile, breaking her tough facade for just a moment, long enough for the boy to give a brighter smile right back.
This kid... He deserves better.
Oh well. It's too late to walk him back home now. She'll just take him back in the morning, and never speak to him again. That's it. The kid's already so happy with his life, he doesn't need her weighing it down. Just knowing that is enough to make her feel whole again. Her son's happy. That's all that matters.
It takes a few moments before the two find a comfortable position in the backseat of the car, the worn leather seat providing mild support. Philei chose to sit upright while letting Picaro lay across, cradling his head in her lap so she can run her fingers through his perfectly smooth hair, to convince herself this isn't just some dream she's having.
"Hey, Mom?" Picaro pipes up, Philei ready to dodge the question, deny him dinner she doesn't have, or otherwise break the kid's heart in having to stay in this gross, uncomfortable car with a woman he's just met, a situation he really should run from-
"Can you sing me a lullaby? I've uh... Never really had that, y'know? I know you probably can't bake cookies or pack me sack lunches in the car but... Y'know? I want the mom experience? Kinda? I dunno how to word it but-"
"Lullaby? Yeah, uh." Philei's mind races. She hadn't anticipated that. Really, did she know any lullabies? The tunes and melodies are crisp in her mind, but the lyrics, the meanings aren't. That's not even factoring in the fact that it's been well over a decade since she sang. Her voice had always felt like sandpaper in her throat, yet part of her wanted, no, needed to do this for him. To give him just this one motherly act she knew, deep down, she could provide him.
Yet the words aren't coming out.
"It doesn't have to be like, a lullaby. I'm not a baby. Just, like, any old song! Really. Um, you look like you like punk, so maybe like, an acoustic version of a rock song? Please, Mom? Puh-leeeeease?"
She can't say no to that face.
... "I don't want this moment..."
Eugh. She can feel the words getting caught in her throat, her coarse voice struggling to hit a note high enough to be considered singing in her eyes. But the way her kid smiles up at her, patiently waiting for her to continue... It gives her enough drive to keep going.
... "To ever end
Where everything's nothing
Without you."
Almost subconsciously, her fingers stroke through his mane to the slow, steady beat of her song, the rust shaking out of her voice from years upon years of not being used.
"I'd wait here forever just to...
To see you smile
'Cuz it's true
I am nothing
Without you."
It felt... Good, to get this off her chest. To be able to feel this way with the boy she's just met. With her son. It was right. The words flow a little more naturally with time.
"Through it all, I've made my mistakes
I'll stumble and fall
But I mean these words.."
Their eyes meet, shimmering in the faint moonlight. Nothing in the world mattered to them but this moment, this reunion, the first step to righting all the wrongs that've befallen them. Philei cracks an earnest smile, ducking her head down to gingerly bump her nose against his.
"I want you to know...
With everything, I won't let this go
These words are my heart and soul.
I'll hold onto this moment, you know?
'Cuz I'd bleed my heart out to show
That I won't let go."
Picaro reaches up, shuffling awkwardly in his seat as he gets comfortable, turning on his side somewhat, clasping his mother's free hand in his own. Philei, determined to give the boy a full lullaby, continues to sing, her voice keeping to a low, restrained, almost whisper of a tone, to mask her inability to hold a note proper...
"Thoughts read are spoken, forever in doubt
And pieces of memories
Fall to the ground.
I know what I did and so
I won't let this go.
'Cuz it's true
I am nothing
Without you."
These next few words always made Philei choke up. This song meant a lot to her. She had always hoped someone would come by and make her feel the way this song felt to her. And here she is. Her grip on Picaro's hand grows firmer, more secure,
"All the streets, where I walked alone
With nowhere to go...
Have come to an end.
I want you to know...
With everything, I won't let this go
These words are my heart and soul.
I'll hold onto this moment, you know?
'Cuz I'd bleed my heart out to show
That I won't let go."
Picaro seems even more at ease now, if that was even possible, his eyes starting to drift shut. He almost looked like an angel to her, so peaceful around a monster like her...
"In front of your eyes
It falls from the skies
When you don't know what you're looking to find
In front of your eyes
It falls from the skies
When you just never know what you will find...
... I don't want this moment...
To ever end
Where everything's nothing...
Without you."
She can feel him resting, his breathing slowed. The boy's clearly asleep but... Philei wants to keep going. She'd never even considered having a mother sing you a lullaby to be so comforting, despite never having it herself. It'd be wrong if she didn't finish...
"I want you to know...
With everything, I won't let this go
These words are my heart and soul.
I'll hold onto this moment, you know?
'Cuz I'd bleed my heart out to show..."
Everything's going to be okay. She'd figure it out somehow. What matters now is that she's found her boy.
"That I won't let go."
