Full resolution closeup of a work in progress. This (or a bit larger) is pretty much the size I prefer to work at; the full figure is almost 3000 pixels tall.
One reason to stay so large is it saves you a lot of swearing when doing the finer details. I also like it because it just gives.. "more" art.
I'm really undecided how to do "his" ears. "Magic" has mutated him into something more animal-like, but he doesn't have fur though. And maybe an edge where the horns start out of the skin. And maybe magic sparkly no-white emerald eyes, what do I know
I don't always finish the lines before continuing; if they bore me I start colouring parts. For shading I like to zoom out and do a real rough colour and shadow placement first, to ensure the overall consistency. Then I zoom in and detail, sometimes first as a medium pass, then a more detailled pass, going randomly over the figure. I try to remember to toss some odd hues in that break away from the base. When picking a shadow colour I usually just grab one that "looks right" or mix something up, rather than simply darkening the base colour.
Edit: Found some good ears, thanks! One of the concerns were they were so perpendicular to the head but if they are goat ears that works
