My response to the latest censorship scandal in the fandom. I won't name the artists to avoid involving them, nor the website in cause which should be easy to guess anyway. This incident was made special by the fact that several popular figures in the fandom have been banned without warning for something they've drawn... in at least one case this likely impacted the artist's life and ruined their career, since they've also lost a production group owned together with other users who weren't themselves accused of anything. The artists were not even punished for what they did on the site in cause, but for things that supposedly happened on other websites owned by entirely different people... one case involved an user lying to site admins about how tags on another art page worked.
The purpose of this image is to face the fandom with a harsh but clear reality about where we're headed: Certain furries are putting this fandom on par with humanity's most shameful factions and practices, for no reason other than to satisfy a grudge toward a community they stubbornly wish to associate with sexual harassment. A misguided vocal minority continues to demand the criminalization of art that's sensitive to them, recruit others into their persecution of artists, and literally destroy the lives of real people to defend those of fictional characters from fictional dangers. You can't burn books but not call it book burning, no matter how much you tell yourself "this time it must be different even if it looks the same"... have at least the guts to stand next to the people who's behavior you're imitating, as history won't erase itself to grant you your ignorance.
All images used here are under a CC0 / CC-BY / CC-BY-SA license while also being covered by the fair use exemption. The Nazi image is in no way used to promote that group which I vehemently oppose. The images were used to depict the communities they're referring to, and hold no references to any individuals that appear in them... the fursuit photo is over a decade old and I don't know any of the people involved in it. A few clarifications I forgot to make: The purpose of this was NOT to scream out "furries are Nazis because I don't agree with them"... I know that impression often exists when comparing something to that faction. The purpose was to explain that next to Nazis and some of China's crazed emperors, furries are the only major group (at least to my knowledge) that has passionately supported efforts to keep writers / painters / etc from being allowed to express a given theme or idea through art. The details obviously differ, but I still find this fact disturbing and necessary to point out.
Also I'm aware that some countries still have laws regulating fiction, thus some art sites may be constrained into censorship out of fear of getting in trouble. While I have more understanding toward this situation, my statement primarily addresses those who are sincerely supporting these behaviors. A lot of users openly comment on art sites saying things like "ban this disgusting pedo" because someone dared not age their characters to their liking... that's not something anyone's constraining them to do.
Also I'm aware that some countries still have laws regulating fiction, thus some art sites may be constrained into censorship out of fear of getting in trouble. On one hand, underage porn and anything excusing it? No.
On another, using fantasy to enjoy societal "NOPE's" in an unreal context? I mean, I fap to people getting digested, so I'm pretty sure that counts. In the case of cub porn I strongly don't agree with the content, but I wouldn't go rifling others' pubic hairs about it any more than I would someone who likes guro - It's just not my business, that's all there is to it.
Yes, there's the argument that such is a dangerous idea to have to begin with, as it may encourage the real thing - someone who spends most of their time jerking it to graphic violence would similarly receive such concerns. But first off, people don't actually work like that, at least by default - and second, if we're going to prosecute dangerous ideas then that has to be something equally provided, and since censoring ideas is itself a dangerous idea, welp...
Of course we could all have avoided the entire polarizing mess if, rather than purging everything they didn't want to deal with from the entirety of the site, FA implemented a BLOODY BLACKLIST like LITERALLY EVERYWHERE ELSE.
FA had a presence of cub-lovers, right? But it was a fringe presence, significant but not forefront. Everyone had the ability to post and the only problem was the lack of a blacklist to let little niches of interest not overlap. What do you think happens when you cut off a population from its means? They don't just die off - they find new means. By removing all cub presence on FA they directed it to other places - for instance IB and various archive websites. If there are enough cub-lovers detached from their posting means, they may make their own such - a new website, just for cub porn... And you get two guesses what the 'fringe' material there would probably be. ALLL thanks to the unwillingness of FA staff to know that 'co-existing,' doesn't mean and doesn't even imply 'agreeing'. That's a point I've made so many times it hurts to type it: If drawing cub porn makes you a real child molester, why doesn't drawing feral porn make you a real animal rapist, or drawing vore make you a sexual murderer? Why's this one and only thing so magically different from everything else? One of my concerns is in fact that if people who make those correlations expand them, we may eventually see other stuff being covered as well. Obviously none of the witch hunters are answering that question, since they know there is no satisfying answer to it... the closest answers I've seen were "it's different" or "stop it with your slippery slope mentality", which were more a way of saying "shut up and don't question it".
Other than that, I find it abnormal that even artists who've been here for years now have their livelihood or communities threatened because someone is offended by a drawing. That is so not okay. And unfortunately not enough of us are speaking out about it: A few heads seemed to nod and think "perhaps we overdid it just a bit", but that was not much other than that.

Yeah, that's the same situation as with NSFW being shown to kids. It's something that I have no power to understand.
Everyone should understand that any fetish is not necessarily transferrable to real life. Many people like vore, but would they do it in real life, even if they could? Of course no. I agree. What needs a renovation even more though are people and communities in general... issues like this are far from exclusive to any particular site. I know it won't happen overnight, but I'm trying to at least push things to start going in the right direction. It does often feel like I'm fighting brick walls alone... then again brick walls are not indestructible either, they do eventually collapse.
Please don't automatically take my responses as me being in distress: I am indeed greatly disappointed, but that doesn't mean I'm always depressed or in some state of rage. Things like this do poke at the back of my mind and often don't go away until I feel that I've addressed them, thus it often calms me down to write stuff like this. I'm relatively okay now so please don't worry

Be careful about speaking your mind so openly on a public submission: Some people won't understand the way those like us view the world or concern ourselves with right and wrong. I'm sorry if that sounds bad toward anyone else and assume my responsibility if it's an arrogant comment that people will hold against me.
Anyway there can be a thin balance between wanting to do the right thing and letting the rage of others stupidity get to you. One must never lose their reasoning to negative feelings, I've been there and it WILL cause harm to others and actions one may regret later... however they must not close their eyes to a wrong either, as that apathy has bred a world that made the stupidest of things into normality. I try to be gentle nowadays, perhaps a bit too much sometimes... beyond that though I am unforgiving about a lot of things, once the line is crossed I can only understand so much. I'd say it is an art you acquire with years of having your patience and understanding tested to the limit.

i know this is a pretty old post, but it's the hardest anti-censorship stance i've seen on the issue, at least on furaffinity. just wanted to voice my agreement, there is little that disgusts me as much as censorship in ANY form. anybody trying to censor fictional works is a waste of space on earth, and should be ignored entirely. your actual arguments are as awful as the pro-censorship crowd, but it does make me hopeful to see this passion from my side for once.
