Born in Hawaii, Magnus was the son of a police detective father and professional surfing mother. At first, his life was relatively normal. Some time after his fifth birthday, however, his life changed forever. His father, Akamu, sent him and his mother, Mia, away to stay with acquaintances in Japan. Akamu’s reasoning: “For your own protection.” While understandably upset, Magnus boarded the plane with his mother- but not without one last prolonged goodbye hug with his father.
As the flight neared the Japanese coast, it got caught up in a severe storm. It wasn’t long before lightning struck the engines on one of the wings and the jet started to go down. Magnus clung to his mother as tight as he could, praying they would survive. Despite this, when the jet crashed into the sea, Magnus and his mother became separated amidst the chaos and rushing water. Magnus became disoriented and struggled to find a way out and up to the surface. He would have drowned if a ninja-like figure had not come to his rescue.
Once he was brought to the nearby shore, he started calling out for his mother, looking around frantically. He saw her a short distance away, lying on the sand with another ninja-like figure at her side. He cried out to her as he ran over to where she lay and tried to wake her up. No matter how hard he tried, however, his mother never moved or opened her eyes. The people who rescued Magnus could only watch as realization hit the distressed pup like a speeding bullet train, causing him to cry loudly over his mother’s body.
Left with no other choice, the group of ninja that investigated the plane crash brought Magnus, the lone survivor, to a large temple-like compound in the nearby mountains. It was here that he was taken in by a bengal tiger named Xiulan Yu, effectively adopting him as a son, and was trained in the art of Ninjutsu. In the years that followed, he also formed two special relationships: a close friend in Kazuko Nakahara and a rivalry in Masato Shimizu.
