(I might be calling Kayden’s story ‘Ghostly Shadows’, But I’m not 100% sure.)
This is an AU I’ve had for a year now, and some infor I’ve kept secret because I wasn’t 100% comfortable sharing. I needed to draw different characters from another story, and this is a bit of self indulgence. (My art, I draw what I want. fight me)
In the original story, Kayden becomes pregnant with Yoru’s child, but Hono kills the child not too long after they find out. And this is also when she curses Yoru as well. Kayden thought this meant she could never have kids again (she never knew she could have one in the first place), so that’s why she’s so careless when she met Wolf. So when she finds out she is having kids again, it’s a big shocker to her.
But I thought, what if Hono never did all that, Kayden and Yoru successfully escape? I really want to explore their life together while on the run. All the people they’d meet and the challenges they’d face. IDK how in depth this will be. But it’s a start.
Hope you like it!
I wrote a short story for this peice. I hope you like that too.

Yoru closed the living door with a quiet tap. The cool autumn air rustled the orange and red leaves; blowing his long white hair around with it. The white kitsune wrapped his scarf around his neck to block the chilling winds. He padded his way from the small abandoned home, a large Clydesdale snorting at the sight of him and scrapping her hoof in the hard dirt.
“Easy girl. It’s just me.” He walked to the beast and pet her nose with a cold hand. “I’m getting some more wood for the fire. Stay here to keep watch for me.” He looked the horse in the eye; the horse almost give a nod of approval to him. The kitsune smiled and made his way to the forest to collect dry leaves and sticks. He wouldn’t go too far. He couldn’t. The old home kept his love safe from the horrors of his mother. They escaped from her month ago and he was sure they were out of range from her sensing where they were. But he didn’t want to take any chances. He kept his ears open all the time, jumping to the ready at the smallest of noise as he collected the fire’s fuel. He accidentally killed a rabbit when it jumped out from a bush, but it would make for a great breakfast.
After getting enough wood and sticks; along with the bonus meat, he made his way back to the small home. Yoru saw the horse close to the door; letting out a loud neigh when she spot him. Instantly he sensed something was wrong and bolted inside. The sight he saw was heartbreaking to see; his lover slumped over and vomiting onto the floor. The smaller kitsune let out a small whine when she finished puking out the small dinner from the night before. Yoru dropped the pile of wood near the current fire and made his way over to the female.
“Are you okay, Kayden?” He asks, kneeling next to her to rub her back. Soft sniffles came from her.
“It hurts, Yoru… I don’t li-“ she stops herself as another wave of nausea hits and she vomits again. Yoru searched for a cloth to clean up the mess when she finished.
After she finished emptying her stomach, Yoru lead Kayden over to the small futon so she could lay down. Kayden was a sobbing mess now, thick tears falling from her eyes and onto the fabric. Yoru went to start boiling water and grabbed another bucket of water in case he needs to clean up another mess.
“I-I think I’m done.” Her pale skin had a thin sheet of sweat; probably from the small amount of stress on her body. Yoru cautiously took off the thick yukata, using the jacket as a blanket for her scarred back.
“I’m sorry. I left to get wood for the fire…” Yoru didn’t know why he was apologizing. Yes, he was slightly responsible for why she is puking her guts out. But he can’t help but feel bad for the woman he loves.
Yoru was taken out of his thoughts when a hand rested on his cheek scars. The green orbs stare into his red ones, they were accompanied by a soft smile. “It’s okay. You came back just when it started. There’s no need to be sorry.” Kayden suddenly gagged and slapped a hand over her mouth; her body curling up from the pain. Yoru was right there with her, a hand on her back with the other gripping Kayden’s hand with a tight hold. He waited with tense muscles, watching her shut her eyes and a look of almost pain on her face.
Not too long after, both relaxed; lucky to not have her vomit. Kayden raised her head to look at Yoru, he was watching her with worried eyes. She bumped her forehead against Yoru’s, they both smiled at one another. Yoru let out a soft chuckle, kissing her on the nose then a gentle peck on her lips. He could slightly taste the sour taste from her vomit. Having her wash out her mouth would have been smart.
“Um… Are you cooking something?” Kayden sniffed the air, tilting her head to look past Yoru’s shoulder. The male fox turned, gasping when he saw the water boiling over. He bolted over to carefully remove the water from over the fire. “Crap crap crap crap!” Was all he chanted, which Kayden couldn’t help but laugh at.
Yoru blushed red on his cheeks, then poured her and himself small cups of hot tea. He shuffled over and handed the tea to Kayden; she took it with no problem. “A woman in the near by village said this tea helps with morning sickness.”
Kayden nods and takes a sip of the hot drink, taking a moment to see if anything will happen. “It smells great and even tastes great too.” She poked out her tongue and wiggles her ears.
“Good. I also snatched a rabbit for breakfast. I should start cooking it for you.” He went to stand up but he was stopped when a hand grabbed his sleeve. He turned back to look at her.
“T-Thank you, Yoru… I feel like I’m a bit of a burden to you. I can’t do much for you at this state” Kayden tears up as she whispered to him.
“No no no no. You’re not a burden. We were so lucky to get away from my mo-… from Hono. I don’t mind doing the work and helping you. You’re giving me more than what I can ever ask for.” Yoru knelt down again to rub a hand on her still flat belly; it was currently housing a new being of life. Half him and half her. “I love you. I promised to protect you. Both of you.” He kissed her again, watching as she continued to cry in front of him.
“Thank you…” She placed her hand on his, blushing red. “We… We love you too” She pushed a grin on her face even as tears still fell from her eyes.
“Let’s get you some food to eat. You must be hungry after puking all your food.” Yoru said, going to the fire so he can take care os his new family.
