tracked that one down! And you're so right. Looks like a Government M1911 was fraternizing with an M16. Deluxe-Reading isn't a brand name I'm familiar with (I was nine when the thing came out) but they usually sold under the name Topper or some variation of it.
The Deluxe-Redding/Topper toys were interesting in that you could only buy them in supermarkets. nowhere else. Three things about these toys- They were big and gaudy, were expensive to buy for their time period, and they were made out of the cheapest, most brittle plastic you ever saw, so after a few sessions of hard play, they broke or shattered completely. Can you say "rip off", children?
When I mentioned this to my brother (who is even older than I am) the first thing he said was, "Oh, yeah, they used to sell them on the top shelf at First National" (a now-defunct supermarket chain here on the East Coast). And big was also an adjective he used.
