Experience from one of my early retail jobs. They had these advertising demo machines. Long enough ago that they were using VHS. All set to 24/7 operation. Sure, the heads might get dirty on occasion. But, those ran and ran and ran. Then, the first of the DVD models came in. Within weeks, those disc based units were skipping and freezing up. VHS was king.
Truly, scratches are such horrible curses of the laser era. Often making a game load really badly or not at all. And one instance that always sticks in my mind was in this one biker game. CD hit a scratch and my character ran flat into an invisible wall that crossed right through the entire road.
The industry really should have spent an extra penny and copied the 3.5" disks by putting a hard outer case to protect the disks with. It still wouldn't have protected against Disc Rot, which (as I understand it) occurs when the laser passes over sections of this disc too many times.

Before Top Gun and its Pepsi ad in 1987, VHS tapes of mainstream movies were priced for sale to make up for the loss of the theatrical re-release¹. After that, that $80-100 price point was restricted to the period that where rental stores would still have dozens of copies per store with a drop to the $20-25 price point at about the time Blockbuster et.al. would be dumping extra copies.
1: With Top Gun they discovered that they were actually making more money due to much higher sales, and they could use the lowered price as an excuse for the up to six minutes of ads at the start.
