And here we are folks, the first of the WW2 Nose Art Series, and the most famous of B-17s to ever fly, the Memphis Belle. This particular example provided by the ever fluttery
Kizith, who was the highest bidder, and therefor, got to choose the next bomber in the series. The next bomber will be the B-17 "Slightly Dangerous III", which I believe was either an early B-17G, or late B-17F. I only have a plate to go off of for this one, so if any wingnuts know anything more, leave a comment below.
As for the Belle herself, contrary to the 1993 Film, she flew all 25 missions without much difficulty, and her last mission was to hit a target in Nazi Occupied France. She flew home with a skeleton crew (to avoid the same fate as Hot Stuff), and went on a War Bond tour until the war over Europe ended. The Aircraft 41-24485 "Memphis Belle" is currently on display at the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and has been fully restored by their dedicated team.
The B-17 that played her in the film, 44-83546, is making the airshow rounds in the US, while her stunt double, 44-85784 "Sally B" makes the airshow rounds in the United Kingdom and at some European Airshows. The Actual Memphis Belle is currently not able to fly, and it's not likely that the USAF will let her fly due to her Historical Significance.
12,731 B-17s would be produced from 1936 to 1945. During the war, roughly 4,735 planes would be lost in combat, most of which in the days before the P-51 could escort them. The Memphis Belles return to the US was proof that not only could a Bomber survive 25 missions, they could come home, and this boosted moral considerably.
