Well, the tail could serve as a lever. A fully extended flick upward would give some leverage to the body, and assuming it's a mild flick, gravity would do most or all of the work at stopping the tail before it shoved the body back down. Increasing upward force might lead to more curling of the tail required to dissipate it's movement, perhaps finishing the loop with the tail rolling back out.
On the other hand, it occurred to me that his hind legs are outstretched a lot, which would probably reduce the tail's influence a great deal.
A weekend seems kinda quick to me, getting that out with such quality. As usual, your anatomy is glorious.
I don't suppose you know of a name for those bits where the skin stretches from body to limb? (behind the elbow, and to the thigh) I've wondered for years...
