Oh, man... the song makes more sense now.
For years I thought the lyric was 'and the Devil deals it hard'.
I suffered a major case of 'misunderstood lyric syndrome' with this one.
This one I never understood at all:
"Chicken in a bread pan pickin' out dough
Granny, does your dog bite? No child, no?

As sad as it sounds, I've got enough rural in me to suspect this referred to the old habit of putting your used bread pans outside for the chickens to 'clean.' Not unlike my uncle 'frying up raccoon tracks' each morning - left in the bacon grease in the pan he kept outside overnight.
