Chewing Out a Goddess
Between the snake-haired gorgon who turns mortals to stone and the goddess who transformed her as punishment for being raped, it's clear to Maverick who the real monster is.

I always pictured Zeus having Mercy on Medusa and sending a blind man to be her companion so she wouldn't be lonely...I picture Zeus as being this benevolent, mischievous type who won't outright defy Hera, but will, on occasion, lessen the blow of her petty punishments in some way for those afflicted by her jealousy and malice.
If u ask me, Hades is a better God. From what I recall, he may have kidnapped Persephone n took her to his lair, but he actually treated her very nicely to the point of letting her live 6 months in the surface n the other 6 by his side.
For the god of the underworld, he sure is more mentally mature

After Perseus killed her, she was kinda revered as a protective spirit/household-goddess. Her appearance was so fearsome that images of her were said to repel and destroy evil spirits. Maybe that means she got to rise above Athena's curse, in a way. But, yeah, definitely a dick move on Athena's part. Olympian Gods be crazy.
Well, the original myth had Medusa as one of the three Gorgons. The version depicted is later, found in Ovid's Metamorphoses, book 4. A fine point is that, in the original Latin, Poseidon doesn't rape Medusa -- she willingly has sex with him in Athena's temple. And, as you might guess, having sex in the temple of a virgin goddess is a very big insult.
Medusa: The ultimate victim-blame in the ancient world.
However, I have heard arguments that her Medusa transformation was a (hastily executed and unfortunately consequential) "blessing". The reason Minerva/Athena went with it was partly out of pity and also out of sympathy: She didn't want it to happen again, and perceived it more as a punishment against potential future rapists than against herself. However, it is worth pointing out Athena was the one to give Perseus both the mirror shield Aegis and the sword with which he cut off Medusa's head. Arguments have been made that she also did this out of pity and that she didn't want Medusa to suffer anymore.
For a Goddess of Wisdom, it baffles me to this day that Athena went forward with this "punishment". Another possibility is that she did it in an attempt to avoid the ire of Poseidon, making the difficult choice to essentially punish the victim in order to effectively prevent Poseidon from... Likely drowning everyone in the city in a classic fit of godly rage. The needs of the many, so on.
I completely agree with Maverick here. Athena messed up, big time. And this is coming from someone who actually likes Athena/Minerva. ...But I mean... Maverick's something I'd much rather worship, tbh. ;P Given the choice, anyway.
