I think your number is a little-off... The Blackbird is a Lockheed model SR-71 :3

Not quite. You see the SR-71 is the USAF/mass production designation while A-12 was the CIA(?)/pre-production designation.

This particular blackbird was supposedly the first and only trainer A-12 variant.

As for an F-14, I don't have the pieces, but should I acquire a good haul, I'll build one.

More like an older sibling XD The A-12's were what they were before they were re-designated as SR-71.

Actually, neither took the other's desgination, A-12 and SR-71 being two seperate programs (tho' that latter was based on the former). Plans were considered to have the A-12's join the SR fleet, but that idea was not taken up, so the Archangels never got the SR designation and got sent to storage after the AF got their SR's. :/

A good source for info on the A-12 program leading to the SR is Jay Miller's "Skunkworks...an Offical History". Lots of good stuff on Kelly's 'workshop'.

There's 2 types of Blackbirds.

YF-12A - NASA's prototype?

Actually there are four. The first being the A-12 (No name), the second is the YF-12 interceptor prototype, the third is the more famous SR-71 Blackbird, and the fourth is the D-21 carrier (senior bowl). =3

And if I remember correctly, the only Blackbird never to fly with J-58's. Only flew with j-75's. I'm still glad it survived.

Indeed it is.... which makes a bit of an argument. Some say the Cockpit drag is the reason for it's low speed, whereas others say it was the engines that made it slow.... :/

I say engines. The cockpit would make it somewhat slower, but not as much as using intirim powerplants. Otherwise, why bother with the -58's if -75's could do the job? XD

Heh, you do have a point. The Cockpit drag would only pushed it down to Mach 2.5 possibly. X3
