I actually have a little experience in this area. One of my friends was making a science fiction student film and I ended up being in it, covered in alien ooze. The special effect they used is the same stuff they used for the T-rex's drool in Jurassic Park (water thickened with methylcellulose). It's an interesting feeling, but after a while, you're ready to get cleaned up.
