Meat Makes Max Sad

Max is soft hearted soul that killing animals to eat bothers him... but it tastes so good.
His government doesn't really allow it's people to eat real meat, you'll usually end up getting some mystery thing that you can't confirm how fresh or healthy it is. Vitamin pills to help build strength and mussel are the normal diet for Loyalists.
Max gets mixed emotions when he 1st killed a wild rabbit because he and his mother were starving. After a horrible cry, and his mother telling him to get over it, he eventually becomes a really fair hunter. Isn't until he becomes the Knight that one day he gets harassed by a Two-Toned talking Rabbit lady, who reminds him of each and every thing he killed for food. Even the government food she gave him a hard time about.
He doesn't want to give up meat because then he'd loose the protein he needs to keep up his energy. Yet he is easily bothered by it...when he's harassed about it. I feel Max's sadness ...
There is more to this story if you guys want to hear about it. Let me know.

Just stay away from the place with the sign that says "Long Pig," Max. You can sleep easier that way.

He's got some good self restraint most of the time. Hunting isn't his main source of food either, but he only does it if he has to. He gets really mad at those who hunt for trophies or fun. That's what bothers him the most.

This is why I don't make fun of folks who abstain from certain dietary lifestyles, even though my favorite thing in the world is barbecue. When I offer some food that has meat and they say "I'm sorry, I don't eat that." what I hear isn't, "I'm a wuss who can't eat meat like a real person.", it's "Challenge accepted. Let's work on some veggie dishes they'll really love." That's the wonder of cooking!

The thing would be that Max considers becoming a form of vegetarian, only because he is guilted into it. He otherwise never likes the idea of just hunting animals for trophies or fun. Self deference is the last option and if killing them was the only way, treat the corpse right.

He could try thinking of things in the ways of the older hunters, before domestication was the primary form of meat for people; respect the animal in the effort they gave to survive, treat the remains with purpose and ensure they're properly disposed of to return them to nature, and don't insult them by mistreating or mishandling them. It's an option; no less pleasant than the current methods, but at least he can try to treat them with a sense of honor.

I feel the same sometimes. I know animals eat each other to survive, and I like meat a lot: but I can't bring myself to kill another living thing. I can't even step on an ant without feeling guilty. I would rather be eaten myself than kill an animal for food with my own hands.

Wallop, a spider friend, does a good job at telling him that, you eat what ya gotta... Human's tend to make the issue more complicated sometimes.
